Hello all,

got a question about a rifle in 357mag. i have a bunch of 38 special and 357 mag laying around and wouldn't mind finding something to put them through... was thinking of a lever gun of some sort.. but besides plinking what would a 357 be good for? i want the rifle for a camp gun/ plinker but would like to know it's limits and what game would if be suitable for? thanks for the info! Cheers!

.357

I have model 94 trapper shot a deer with it ok for this to 100yds or so should use heavier bullets 158 or more I mostly use mine for fun gongs at the range or tin can or whatever out in the bush

yeah that's what i figured ill use it for general plinkin in the woods, the trapper isn't made anymore if i recall correctly, any suggestions on a decent rifle in this caliber??

I backpack with my Marlin 1894C in southern B.C. quite often. I handload 185gr bullets HOT and I don't feel under-gunned in blackie or cat territory for a second.

When I'm out and about close to home there are grizzlies, and I will grab my 1894P in .44 mag or my 1895 Guide. Lots to love about a classic lever in a pistol cal., hard to beat for a rambling rifle. You can plink cheap with .38spc, and AFAIK winchester makes a hunting round in .357mag with a heavily constructed bullet if you don't handload.

None of the Winchester 94s are being made anymore. Haven't since FN Herstal Manufacturing Inc. shut down the factory in 2006. FN Herstal Manufacturing Inc. is supposed to be making a couple of VERY expensive high end Model 94s but I haven't heard of any being available yet. And they are supposed to be in 30-30, not a handgun round.

You are pretty much stuck with used or an off shore copy which fortunately there are several good quality brands.

I like my Rossi M92 .357, but the biggest game I've shot with it are beavers, so far. I think it is a close range deer rifle, but just barley and with heavy bullets only. Fun gun to shoot! Tin cans quiver in fear.

I have a Marlin Cowboy in 357 Mag..absoulutly one of the best rifles i have ever handled..i use the the 38 special for plinking and target shooting and the 357 Mag is also a great round for light game up to 100 Meters..very nice action and best of all factory sights were DOA right out of the box

AFAIC you will not go wrong with the Cowboy in .357 Mag

here is a picture of my 2 cowboys..top is a Winchester 30/30 and the bottom is the Marlin Cowboy in .357 Magnum

My favorite carry-rifle, the Marlin 1894c! With 180 gr cast bullets & a good dose
of A-2400 powder is quite capable while hunting in my neck of the woods.
This sweet little guns short OAL & at 5-1/2 lbs., does it all from rabbits (with light loads) to bear if I need to....

Of course I don't live in grizzly country!

I paid $350 for a Marlin at a Gun Show a few years and haven't looked back since. 2 deer via niece and nephew with regular hp's. Would like to try the LeveRelovation rds some day.

One of the neighbor's had a Rossi 3in1 combo. After seeing it open itself up after firing and Rossi not wanting to do anything about that, I won't buy one.... even thou that "Mare's Leg looks like the coolest thing I've seen in awhile

I have a 20" bbl Rossi 92 in .357 mag and it holds 10 + 1. What bbl length are you referring to that only holds 8 + 1? Curious.
