Hey guys, I went back about 14 pages looking for a thread about the .357mag, but didn't have any luck. I recently purchased a .357 mag S&W and would like to get a few recipes for a simple plinking round. I am partial to Nosler bullets for all my rifles, but am open to suggestion as this is my first pistol to own/reload for. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

For plinking, just use normal pressure .38 spl cartridges/reloads. Lead Semi Wadcutter or Round Nose 158 grain bullets should be fine.

If you reload, 3.7 grains Titegroup under a 158 grain LSWC bullet in .38 spl brass should be accurate and produce little felt recoil. If you like + P .38 spl, just bump up to 4.3 grains TG.
 
I have found 2400 to be a good powder for accurate loads with my .357
i have also found that cam pro has some very consistant plated bullits that are cheap for plinking and accurate to boot. Hornady bullits are very good as well.
 
I'm quite new to the 38/357 platform, but I do know that 2.5-2.7 grains of Clays with a 148 grain wadcutter in 38 Special brass with c.o.l. of 1.16 shoots great. Very mild load that I'm sure your grandmother could shoot. On the other end of the spectrum is about 14.5 grains W-296 with 158 grain XTP's.
 
Cast work well in the .357 mag. from soft cast wadcutters to heavyweight swc designs meant for big game, you can save alot of money by reloading cast and get better results on game.

There are a few commercial sources of cast bullets if you aren't set up to cast your own.
 
Where you are matters. If you buy bullets on-line, the shipping will hurt.
"...Gonna stay away from the cast bullets for now..." Shooting jacketed bullets gets expensive fast. Noslers are really expensive. 158 grain jacketed bullets run $47US per 250, MSRP. Hornady's run $25.95Cdn.
 
If you are shooting jacketed bullets in your 357, please try Lil'gun. It is a great powder for practically all the heavier jacketed bullets, and develops less pressure at equal velocity to W296 or H110. Eagleye.
