.357 vs .44 for home defence?

Although I would imagine that they would be very hard on a barrel, I don't think you would have to worry about them going through walls too much and the wounds would be nasty.

I have this model Sentry Safe sitting about four inches from my bed. Its covered with a table cloth to make it look like a night stand and I have my alarm clock on it.

Would be it legal to store a handgun in it without a trigger lock and with a few loaded clips of ammo on another shelf within the safe?

The safe requires a 5 digit combination to be opened and automatically locks itself for 5 minutes if the wrong code is entered three times. Weight is 99 pounds (44 kg) so its not easy to move around.

As I have posted several times before, I keep one in a 'safe', electronic combo, two mags with Golden Sabers in them and a SureFire 6P bolted to the wall in my closet. Is it legal? Yes it follows the regs. Takes me a whole 5 secs to get out, practice makes perfact.

P.S. Before someone jumps all over you, they're Magazines, not Clips....:)

Just my opinion, but what is up with all these threads regarding a home defense cartridge.

If your pistols and revolvers are stored legally, there is no time to get ahold of one in time for home defense unless someone calls and tells you he is coming over to kill you in five minutes, and even then, you would still be charged with multiple firearms offences.

Be realistic, gentlemen, we live in Canada.

Excuse me??? I had a junky prowling around my floor in my secured, well maintained, upscale downtown condo LAST WEEK at 1am. My father's neighbour was a victim of a home invasion in a seniors gated community 3yr ago. My client and his family were victims of a home invasion which resulted into a hostage scenario in "fricken" sleepy Williams Lake BC. We have insurance for our mortgage, and health. We buy coverage for life and disability. Unless the cops can give people a 100% guarantee that there will not be casualties of violence, understanding that reasonable precautions like locking my door at night are taken etc., then home defense will not be an issue. Otherwise, most people I know, refuse to be a victim. As far as having firearms at hand, I heard that it might be reasonable to be cleaning one's firearm at 1am in the morning which coincidentally is the same time an intruder might be breaking in.

Sorry buddy, I don't know where you live but Canada has many types of predators that are not always bears, cougars, and wolves. Be a victim if you want.

Point taken.

Since many of us haven't been exposed to that on a regular basis, it may make a difference to us. I come from the farm where we didn't keep our doors locked. I live in the city now, and I have a monitored alarm on my house, but home invasions are not a big problem. Oh, and I'm also a Roughriders fan which according to Troy Westwood of the Blue Bombers would make me a "banjo-picking inbred". Most of the criminals in our city don't know what a handgun is - we're fortunate for that - those that do, tend to use them on each other (gangs are becoming a bit of a problem now). But give it time, they will soon figure out ways to get their hands on more handguns and I may change my mind on this topic.

Keep in mind, I am not young, nor naive and do not wear rose coloured glasses.

There was an old western that they did that on. I think it was clint eastwood but I'm not sure. Shot the bad guy then told the town undertaker that he wouldn't pay to bury him, but there was two bucks in his guts if he wanted to dig for it. Me, I think I'll stick to #4's.

The movie was Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid directed by Sam Peckinpah. Kris Kritoffersen plated Billy and James Coburn played Pat Garrett. Bob Dylan was also in it - but not clint Eastwood. An excellent flick

Correct me if I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time, just ask my wife.... ) but you have to have a trigger lock on that pistol to meat regulations. It only counts as a safe and omits the trigger lock requirment if it weights more than 400 lbs.

Having said that, where did you get it, I like the idea.:D

I was going to make a hide it under her gunt comment while in bed, but I think I will pass.

jumpin in late on this thread but... a 1911 .45 with 230gr of nothin but knockdown power. a wheel gun just doesn't cut it in my opinion. my next choice would be a 12 ga tactical auto shotty :D

I think .44 mag is too much for home defence, unless the robbers wear body armour ;)
In case if they do - you probably have no chance anyway - they are professionals from police or secret service :)
.357 is much easier to manage and still an excellent stopper. But again, if you are planning to protect your home from bears... .44 is the best solution :)

OK, your wrong about the safe. It is just stated that if a 'safe'. Since that peticular 'lock-box' is considered a 'safe' it qualifies, hence no requirement for a trigger lock, and if I would put one on, it would be a combo with the combo set to open. There is no weight requirement for something to be considered a safe. I got it at CT BTW....on sale at $30 reg. $60ish.

...meat regulations...
I'm not sure what "Meat Regulations" have to do with this.. :) or not sure where your mind is :)

... Even the lowly 38 Special will penetrate virtually the whole length of the average suburban house. Move up the scale and the 357 may well completely penetrate the intended target and continue it's merry way! A 44 Mag. is a certainty to keep on going ! My own personal choice was always the 38Spl. with the so called "FBI Load" out of a short barreled revolver. (158gr,SWC/HP +P ) as in the Old RCMP Load, out of the model 10s. When talking self defense, one should always bear in mind ,there are legal limitations ,and responsibilities, with the potential, if a wrong choice is made, to end up behind bars and being hounded with horrendous legal bills!!! ... I may be way off base here so feel free to enlighten me.....but, I would think that if you shoot someone in your house, you better be able to prove that he was trying to kill you and not just rob your vcr or you'll be in a heap of sh*t. I don't think you'd get away with shooting someone just because they were in your house and you were startled. I think in this country even if the purp was carrying a butcher knife, you'd still be lucky to avoid going to jail and even then you'd be so far in lawyer debt that you wouldn't be able to afford to shoot your .22lr.
Am I out of touch with reality or what?

All that being said, I'd be happy with anything that goes bang....but my preference would be a sawed off shotgun with birdshot (and no plug of course).
