357mag for deer hunting

I have two rifles in 357 and they are great, in my lever I use hard cast lead and 158-200 gn pills, gets the job done at a 100 for my ruger77-357 I hunt with lever revolutions if I want to push it past 100 yards by a bit. I always carry a mag with hard cast as well.

Anyone use a 357mag in a rifle for deer hunting out to a hundred yards?I ve been thinking about getting a light rifle for Deer hunting and most deer where I hunt are shot under 100 yards with 50 being the norm.

Not anymore. I use to have an IMI .357 timberwolf. I shot a doe in the heart at about 65 yards or so, with a handloaded 180 gr. partition behind 13.5 grains of h-110. It was a killer rig. I wish I still had it! Plenty of muscle, out to 100 yards. In my opinion.

Excellent rifle for general us and will kill a deer if pointed correctly. The gun you carry the most is the one you will be most effective with.

When the .357 was introduced it was used on every game animal on the continent.

With the pistol cartridge restrictions in many NE US states, there are hundreds of thousands of hunters using .357 and .44 Mags for deer... keep your range under 100 yards and put one in the boiler room and you will be fine... we prefer the .44 RM personally and use it in tight cover for deer. Lots of guys are reaming their .357's to Maxi, .44 RM to .445 SM and their .45 LC's to .454 Casull... personally, if I need more than the .44 RM in a brush gun, I'll just go with .45/70.

I don't blame ya but you should still try the Casull. It's bloody f*cking amazing. :D An M1892 is about 6.5 lbs fully loaded too. I luvs my'n. Lots.

Not all who poach do it for money, trophies or fun...some did it for survival. Think of how many old timers you know you took deer with what ever guns they had during harsh times when food was needed? Which was commonly a .22LR...cheap and simple guns and the ammo was cheap.

absolutely true and I think they should remove the name "poacher" under those circumstances. To me that's not poaching, it's surviving and staying alive!
Thank you, I stand corrected. Post #17.

I'm using my .357 Rossi Baby Carbine this upcoming deer season, and have total confidence in
it for the critters around here. I don't intend to push the range past 80yds. or so. I use 158 to
180 gr. cast boolits at around 1400 fps. This little gun carries effortlessly and is perfect for
use in a tree stand.

I have shot the .454 Casull, and it is a very nice caliber... but when I assessed my aresenal, I decided to drop it and just stick with the .44 RM with hard cast and .45/70 with Marlin level loads... works for me and does everything I need without a neck in the case.
