Well I bought a new .358 Win rifle to hunt moose this year and my hunting buddy backed out. So I want to use my new rifle during deer but am wondering if its too much bullet for a smaller animal than I was planning for.

I'll be using factory Hornady .358 Win 200 gr Interlocks. I know it will drop 'em good (if I do my part) but will it ruin any meat? For deer would I be better off with my .308?

Thanks.

I shot some deer with 200 grain Hornadys in my .35 Whelen. It wasn't any worse than anything else for wrecking meat. The best way to save meat is don't shoot 'em in the meat.

A friend of mine shot a doe with his. 35 Whelen using the Remington 200 gr PSP. The bullet exited in the opposite side of the rib cage of the doe and took a Frisbee sized piece of hide with it, and it was a bang flop. Very impressive and didn't waste any meat. When I saw that, I needed to own a Whelen. You should be perfectly fine using your. 358 Win on deer. Like dogleg said, don't shoot'em in the meat!

IME the 200 grain bullets are perfect in the .358 Win... I shoot the IL's and FTX's... both are excellent... have come to like the 200 FTX bullets in a .350 RM also. I bet they will do LESS peripheral meat damage than a 150 in a .30/06 or a 130 in a .270...

That's great news guys, thanks!

I really want to use this rifle - I think it will be perfect where I hunt. It was intended to be my moose gun, I bought a new to me .308 to up gun from my .243 Savage 99 for deer. Too bad we're only allowed to take one buck this year in MB.

That the good thing about the 358, it works well on big and bigger game. Nothing a 30/06 or 308 won't do, but it's a lot cooler.

I'm loading 200gr Hornadys in my 358 for deer this fall. If I ever get to use it for moose it will be either 250gr Speers or 200gr TTSX.

If you wanted, try 250gr projectiles, they will more likely pin hole the Deer an not belt it around as much?

ive shot little Fallow with my Whelen an it looked better than when it was shot with a 130gr .270

Yeah... for my aborted moose hunt I had 225 and 250 gr. Nosler Partitions and just p/u a box of Speer Hot Cors to try. I've read good things about the Hot Cors and they're half the price of Noslers Partitions.

I've read that the faster lighter bullets can do more destruction than the bigger slow bullets. (nice and slow is good for more than bullets)

But my most of my first hand experience has been with my .243 and I can't say I've had any problems with well placed shots. But I passed on shots that were less than ideal so I wanted to up gun and have more whampf...!

You'll have all the Whampf you want in the .358 Winchester matey!

Cheers

LOL. My buddy was shooting on the handgun range when I was zeroing my .358 on the rifle range and he said they could hear the 'whampf' clearly. I thought maybe it was the guy with the muzzleloader but my buddy said no, it was definitely me.

All the best, Whelan

MANY MANY MANY whitetail have fallen to the .35 Remington which shares a .358" bullet - no problem.
