358 in a 99

hey guys i just picked up a 99 f in 358 win,in a round 85%+ condition or better.The old guy said he bought it in 1956 or 1958 there abouts..the ser# is 927###.
There is an h in a circle in front of the lever.
The wood is verry good and no cracks.blueing is also verry good with case coulering on the lever,also lever safety.
I was wondering how old it is and what it is worth?
it has front and rear sight and is also drilled for mounting a scope.

The 'H' indicates 1956.
99's in .358 Win are uncommon. There's a guy on Gunbroker with one that was made shortly before yours(by a few days. S/N is 918###.). He's asking $1995US. Don't think you'd get that much in Canada. Unless you found one of those rabidly fanatic Savage collectors who wants it.
 
Nice find. I have a friend who has one that is mint, I will have to ask him what they go for. I've been looking for a nice one in 284, they are not easy to find either. Nice 284s up here seem to fall in the $800-$1000 range, maybe same for 358. Not sure, but I'm sure one of the collectors will chime in.

Just a little more additional information from the Blue Book . . .

99F production spanned 1955-73. Examples found in .250-3000, .358, or .284 are worth 35% more. Many 99F rifles had the frame marked 99M.
 
Frank, I hope you realise that you have a desireable hunting rifle and one that also has some value, I wonder if that old guy realised what he let go, if you appreciate what you have then take it out and use it, having a gun that also has value is a win win situation no matter the model or caliber.

ps: I also own the same rifle and bought it from one of the CGN members here, I thanked him for passing on a great rifle to me and will be using it for my next deer hunt, one day I hope my kids will be able to appreciate what they have in their hands. I have shot a few deer with the 358 WIn. (yes I own more than one) and can tell you that it lays them down in a hurry.
 
While I am not a big fan of the '99, I sure like the .358 and I think you done good, prolly made some money and have an excellent hunting caliber!
 
That has collector's value because it is rare AND is a good all around big game rifle also. There are enough 35cal fans that would want that rifle if you ever decide to sell it.

Factory ammo is over priced with few (one?) available choices and is scarce also. So many 358Win users find reloading to be very rewarding on several levels - I consider reloading almost a necessity for the 358Win. Incidentally my Lyman manual states they used that model rifle to develop all its 358Win loads. There are several articles about the 358 linked on my articles page - http://35cal.com/articles.html
