358 norma

I have a Ruger Number 1 and a Win Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in 358NM Long Neck and I love both of them. I haven’t hunted moose for a few years but plan to again some day. There are lots of different calibre out there but the .358 Norma is just an awesome cartridge. I love the .35 Whelen and this is just his big brother.

If you're referring to the BRNO 602, you will quickly find it very difficult to find one of those in 358NM and if you do, it will be quite expensive.

On top of that, the 602 is grossly overweight for a 358 or even a 375.

that is a very good point. good rifle but too heavy. last time i said so, someone mentionned i needed to grow a pair lol ...

winter is coming soon. hope you can try it again this season. seen one black bear shot and killed and i liked too ...so many calibers so little time ...
 
I have been shooting my Shultz quite a bite of late trying to find a replacement bullet for it. It came with hanloads with 250grain Speer Grand Slams, and they shoot 5/8"-1" groups regular @ 200 yards. Unfortunately I Speer no longer supports this Calibre in the Grand Slam, so I've tested the vernabable 250gr Hornady RN, shoot about 2"-3" @200yrds, tryed 225 Nosler Partistions about 2" average @ 200yrds.
So I'm going deep into my bullet stash and trying some Swift 250gr A-Frames to see how well they do at 200 yards?
By the way all these loads shot 1 to 1/2 MOA at 100 meters!
I know I'm asking a lot of a a snow plow, but those Grand Slams we're very accurate in the old Shultz and Larsen!
And those who want to argue the merits of this cartridge, you either like it or you don't��

Did you try Sierra 225 Spitzer's?
 
I have a Shultz and Larsen model 65 in 358 norma, Tradex has factory ammo and brass. You could build one out of any action for a belted magnum if you cant find an original.
 
Nope, haven't tryed the Seirra 225, as none available local, and not happy with pricing with there bullets the last few years, on large Calibre bullets! They use to be real reSonable, and if I'm going to pay, I will have a better contructucted bullet. (They really pissed me off 375 bullet priceing change).
 
We'll tryed the Swift 250gr bullets with IMR 4350 @ 200 yards, what a dissatisfied results,ba 6" three shot group and 6" lower than the Hornady 250 RN that I point of aim at 200 yards. So the Hornady round nose are the best at 200 from S&L 358 NM, other than the Speer 250gr Grand Slams that are now non existent!
It's a good thing I have a box's of the Hornady 250's that will last me years! Funny how the cheapest bullet works the best?
 
You can’t go wrong with the 358 cal. Don’t let anyone sway your decision. There are lots of 358 bullets. Also once you see a animal hit with the 358 bullets you will be a believer. That extra frontal area of that bullet transfers energy fast and drops animal with authority.
Lots of guys get hung up on S.D and B.C of bullets before trying the 358. Those numbers may not be high but this is not a long range cartridge.
I think the reason the 358 shines is the bullet diameter mixed with the lower S.D of the bullets. There is enough weight in the 225+ bullets to penetrate but because of the low SD the bullet rapidly expands and transfers energy fast and really disrupts the nervous system.
I don’t own the Norma but have shot quite a bit of game with the 35 Whelen and the kills have been faster than any other cartridge in my safe in which I have many rifles to choose from.
