.358 STA. Anyone have one? Opinions? Considering a build in this caliber.

I Have a Model 70 CRF that would be the basis for a custom build. I have been intrigued with the .358 STA for a # of years and am looking for some input from fellow CGN'ers on this cartridge. Let me say that I already own
guns in .300Win,.340wby,.350rem mag,and .375 ruger so its not needed to
fill a midbore role for hunting.Instead it would just be an interesting "Boomer"
to have.

As a secondary ques. apart from opening up the bolt face(gun is a .270Win)
can the extractor be modified to slip over the larger rim or will a new extractor
need to be sourced for .532 case head size?

Probably best to find a magnum doner rifle. I know bolt faces can be opened & you will get a variety of opinions on whether to do it or not. If you didn't already have a 340 WBY I'd tell you to build one of these.

I say build it. The extractor can be modified for magnum duty. You'll also have to get it to feed the carts. While you're at it, you might as well get a "404 mag box" and a more friendly follower.

I love that cartridge on paper. 3000fps with 250gr Partitions or 2850fps with a 275gr Swift A-Frame. I'd do it. Get you hands on some Winchester 7mm STW brass though and keep annealing. I'd do it. Use a 24" tube to make it classy

I do not have that one but have a 350 Super Mashburn, that prints 225s 3300 fps and is a handful in the recoil depo.........

The 358 STA is pretty close to it

The boltface can be opened. I think it costs 100-125 bucks. Other parts will be necessary also but it can be done. It would be a nice gun in the end.

Thanks for the replies. Thats a fine looking rifle Wookie316. I thought of doing
this build on my Sako AV as well but it shoots too damn good to consider pulling the barrel.Typical Sako! I might start the process by having the bolt face opened and the factory barrel re-chambered to .270Wby.This way I could burn it up shooting(I've already got lots of brass and bullets)while I
source out the stock,barrel,magbox/follower.

Too bad our dollar wasn't a bit stronger as this rifle would fit the bill nicely

Couldn't come close to duplicating this for the money!

Anybody try Nosler's 225gr Balistic Tip? I have a .350 Rem Mag but this bullet
cant be seated properly with the model 7's short magazine box. I was curious
as to how well it holds up on game. Strangely it has a lower B.C. than a Partition in the same weight? Partition must be longer?

I'll quit rambling, I appreciate any further input.
