.358 Win bolt actions

It seems our factory selection here in .358 Win bolt actions is limited to Ruger. I want a carbine but the Frontier is too small because I also want to shoot it. Are there any others available new or occasionally old? Any writing on the wall for .358 Win coming from other mfgs?

If I decide to build one what is the best choice in twist for most medium bullet weights? Not worried about the lightest pistol bullets but I might want to shoot gaschecks as light as about 158 gr.

You need one of these .... It's a 20" Shilen on a Model Seven.

I have the Ruger Hawkeye in stainless and I love it. Very accurate out of the box. It's too bad that there are not more manufacturers chambering the .358win in a bolt action. It is a proven performing hunting round.

If you are set on a carbine, you could always buy a Ruger and have the barrel cut and re-crowned. That would be far cheaper than a custom build.

I'll one up you Paul...how about a 358 in a stainless model seven Remington 22" King fluted barrel....in a Bell and Carlson stock...if I get motivated I'll post a few pics

Sounds nice. I have a 700 375/338 coming from Bevan right now. It will be going into a B&C stock as well.

Thanks guys at this point it's looking like your Ruger James. I plan to tune it with a scope then fit a peep site only. Have to figure out if there's a peep for it or if I have to adapt via Weaver rear base No pre-drilled holes in that receiver right? I may be able to live with the 22" bbl, had already considered chopping it before having front sight ramp sweated on.
 
Having had a 358 Win. years ago, I had to give the little Ruger Frontier a try.
After adding some length to the stock it seemed to fit and balance much better. Not having a long eye relief scope, I put a 1.5 x 5 Leupold on over the receiver, and was pleasantly suprised when several groups hovered around 1" to 1 1/4 " with Hornady 200 gr. and Sierra 225s. especially considering its only got a 16 1/2" barrel.
A one-shot kill @ 200yds. on a LEH mulie doe made it a keeper.
 
As far as factory new the Ruger is just about it in a bolt action, there are lever actions from Browning also. There are the occasional used customs that show up but factory rifles are rare, either used early vintage Rugers or the Winchester M70 pre64 (rare) and the M88 lever action (rare). I am lucky enough to own and hunt with a Pre64 M70 that I enjoy very much and recently saw advertised here a converted pre64 M70 in 308 that was rebored to 358, others that I have seen are a Remington model 600 in 35 Rem. that was rechambered to 358. Honestly for the money the new Ruger in blue or stainless is hard to beat, I think SIR has them in SS for $599 right now. If I was building one today I would choose the Winchester M70 classic short action and just rebarrel everything else is just tikity boo.
