.358 win Fans

Anglia2.....I had a Ruger 77 tang safety flat-bolt, first year production (1968?) that had been re-barrelled to .358W. Could it be the same one? Took one moose with it and traded it to my 'bro. It is now his favorite carry rifle, shot a 5/8" group last time at the range.

HI Dman , That could be the same rifle, I sold it about 11 or 12 yrs ago to a young RCMP constable , so god knows where it ended up as I seem to remember he was being posted somewhere else in the country . When I last saw it there was a weaver 3 power and a timney trigger on it. I'd bet that there aren't to many flat bolt 77's rebarreled to 358 out there. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same rifle.I'm glad you and your buddy have gotten to enjoy it as much as I did. By the way if you ever get tired of it I'd gladly buy it back

Before I scored a bag of 356 brass, I did my load development with 308 brass.
 
My 358 is a Savage 99c. Barrel was re-bored by Ron Smith, metalwork was powdercoated by Corlane, and I restocked it with a camo laminate out of the States. So far just one small buck with it, but it's accurate and does its job. I'm currently loading 250 gr RN Hornady Interlocks, with theory that large slow moving bullets don't need to be premiums.
 
My Brother has used .358 Win. for years in a BLR, with very good success on elk and moose. I have killed some game with a .356 and a bunch more with the .35 Whelen. I like how the heavy bullets continue to penetrate after hitting bone in big animals. I find them a bit more predictable killers for elk and moose compared to smaller bullets.

What's your brothers load?.... Not that I own a .358 winny (standard non- improved version) mind you....:redface:

Me too; just bought a stainless one from Prophet River. will use it on a cougar hunt this winter :)
 
anglia2.....I don't think it's the same one. I bought mine in B.C. at the Kamloops gun show about 12-13 yrs ago; it had a 21" fairly heavy bbl on it with B&L 4x mounted. I'm going to build another .358W, this time on a Rem 722 action, with same barrel contour and length.
 
Hi Dman , the barrel dimensions that you're going with on your new 358 are the same as I used on my 98 in 350 rem mag. Great minds think alike lol . I'll try to post some pics if I can figure out how , good luck on your build and keep us posted
 
I had one - it was built on a VZ24 - and I am sorry I sold it. Vastly underrated cartridge, imo.
 
I'd really love to get my hands on any 94 chambered in 358 win. It seems to be a great cartridge. The problem is that i don't reload just yet so it may have to wait until i get the right equipment/knowledge together to do it. That and i have about 15 guns on the wishlist to get as well as a 358. :)

Mine's a steel receiver, BLR 81' in .358 Winchester. I haven't fired it yet, as my reloading bench is taken down in preparation for a move.

I can't wait! :)
 
Lot's of BLR's around. Who has Winnie 88 in 358 Win? I do but its kind of frankensteen with Rem 21" barrel and Boyds laminate stock which is very good to keep its zero once sighted, litle heavier than original walnut but who needs a lightweight in this caliber? With quality 4x scope and 200gr Rem SPCL at 2600+FPS I killed lots of deer up to 275yds and with spare clip loaded with 250gr bullets I prefer it to any other caliber in the bush. If there is one vastly underrated cartridge this must be the one.
 
mine is a early blr. Nice accurate little rifle. Only shot one deer with it so far. Picked up a rem. cdl in 35 whelen last year so the blr will probably sit in the safe more than it should but I will still have to take it out on the odd journey so it doesn't get to lonely. The 35's are a great caliber to accompany the 280 rem.:)
 
G-runner Ive got an 88 as well. Had to redo the stock as it had split on both sides from the pistol grip to the forend. Its a user.
As much as I read and can achieve myself, many folks getting 2300fps with 250's, I have still to find one load that is accurate. All of my 358's shoot their best with loads between 2150-2250fps. No big deal but Im still searching. Otherwise Im gunna have to buy another unit to give me some obstacles. Maybe Ramshot TAC will get me closer :)
 
I rebarreled a Stevens 200 to 358 with a 20" Adams and Bennett barrel and put it in a richards microfit grey laminate. I sold it like an idiot last winter.

Now I am eyeballing a Ruger Frontier. If anyone wants to help my cause, see the EE and buy one of my sacrifices.
