Any info on groups?

Did you try lighter bullets also?

A little imagination goes a long way... see lots pics of dead coyotes next to 458 SOCOM AR's on the net, I would think they would be equally devastating on squirrels.
 
I have both a Ruger & a Rem CDL in 35 whelen and haven't noticed much difference in the trajectory and about 65fps difference in velocity between the two. With a Hornady 225 SP I get about an 18" drop at 300yds when zero'd at 100yds. Unless you're reloading, though, it seems like it could get very expensive for varminting but as long as you're not hoping to keep the hide off of the coyotes it will kill them just as dead as a 223. Last year I hit a small yote with my 300WSM shooting a 165gr TSX and it made a heck of a mess of him. I imagine a whelen or 358 would have a similar effect. As for gophers, just make sure you have a few lined up in a row to make it worth while.:D
 
OK, So I think ill start with a savage 11fcxp3 in 243. And add a 20 inch medium contour barrel in .358 winchester at 1-16 twist. Use 225 partitions for big stuff and pistol bullets for the small stuff.

Now, Any one know got ideas about rifling??

6 groove standard??
 
The .35s make great cast bullet guns, you can use them for everything from Varmints to big game, in my .356 Win. I use 200gr. flat point Gc bullets and 250 gr. fl pt Gc bullets. Prolly save 50% off jacketed bullet price.
 
Speer makes a 180 grain SPFN, BC of .245 that would probably do great things on varmints and such. I'm sure it would be even better then great
on Deer sized critters as well. Sort of a .243 on steroids.:D
 
Well I did some Guestimation regarding velocities and I get pretty much the same trajectories from the 125 grn HP to the 180 grn SSP (single shot pistol) using the BC's from Hornady's manual.

.6 high at 100 0 at 150 -2 at 200 -12 at 300 Not terrible.

I still want to see what happens when you blast a yote with with a big Light HP thats cruisin.

Ya, no matter how you slice it, I don't think the .358 Win, or 35 Whelen was ever intended as a long range varmint cartridge. I misspoke when I said
" a .243 on steroids", what I should have said was " a .243 couch potato", fat and slow.:D But when "fat and slow" meets up with "Wiley", or "Bambi", they
are done like dinner.
 
Just had to add a little story here. I have a .358 win I put together from a Win 670 action and Montana Rifleman Barrel. I load a 158 gr. Rem. bullet with 42 gr. IMR4198 in an IVI case, velocity is nearly 2800fps. Anyway I shot a skunk walking away from me at about 20 yds. There was chunks of it spread for 30 feet! No smell. Great varmint load at close range.
 
In my 358, I load up 158 JHP over 5 grains of Green dot for chickens when out for big game. They chrony at about 600 fps and are almost silent. I never thought of spooling up a full house load for them though. Interesting.

No fibre-wad filler needed?

Did you need to elevate the muzzle, with the squib load in the chamber, just prior to shooting?
