which would you pick? I can get a marlin 444s with 30 rounds of ammo or a savage 99 in 358win with 4 boxes of ammo, both rifles are in good condition, will be using it for bear and deer

Both the 444 is a short Rangel hard hitting cartridge, the 358 is a medium range hard hitting cartridge. So it depends on The range your shooting.

I love the .308 based case, so caliber wise, I woukd pick it........ I hate the savage 99 and woukd pick the marlin as the better rifle......

Truthfully, if you are hunting under 200 yards, which is suspect is your situation based on location, pick the rifle of the two you like and get out there and have some fun......

ya 200 would be a max shot and only if I see something on the way to my stand, at my stand 150yds would be a max shot

99 vs Marlin

The Savage would be the one for me, cheap brass and EASILY a 300-350yrd rifle with handloads. It's much more versatile. Since when is a Marlin superior to a 99? I've had both and both were great in every aspect. The 99 will be worth more from a collectors point of view down the road should you desire to sell

Since it's ugly as hell......That's when...... Lol........ But beauty is in the eye of the beerholder........ Hence my opinion....

In the east ... deer, bear & moose, I'd pick the Savage 99 in 358. Classy piece. Mad Dog would approve.

First ran across the 358 in a Model 88 Winchester a fellow from camp was using. He was almost a legend
locally for stacking up the deer, bear & moose like cordwood. Needless to say, he was a good shot and a
well-experienced hunter. The old Winchester '71's in 348 are also a pretty fine "eastern" outfit for the bush.

200gr Barnes TSX @2750 fps, .40" grps @100, 358 Win in a LW BLR .... know your trajectory, short to medium to long range. Moose, Elk, Deer, Bears what have you. 250gr Speer @2400fps for dangerous critters when needed. My most favourite rifle.

I like the 99 and I like the .358, so that would be my vote.

I'll go with the 444. Part of the reason, to my eye a lever gun doesn't look right without an exposed hammer. As such, the 'likes' of the 99 Savage and 88 Winchester don't do much for me.

The Marlin 444S, using reloads with the 265gr Hornady, has worked well for me on a variety of big game and ranges.

It was what I used a;) 'few' years back on my last Moose hunt with Dad.

Oh, my choice for a 35 would be the 358 Norma Magnum.

I don't think so. Unless you're loading your rounds to 80,000psi I have no idea how you're getting those velocities. Barnes has their 200gr bullet listed at max as 2500fps with about 47gr powder. Hodgdon has their 250gr Partition listed at max 2278fps with a compressed load of 47.0gr Varget. Even the 35Whelan, using 6-12gr more powder falls right around the 2400-2500 mark.

I am very fond of the .358, but realistic.

I am shooting a hot loaded 200 FTX at 2600 fps... don't think I could squeeze out another 25 fps, let alone 150.
