Hi, I have a 7mm Rem. mag. with a shot out barrel and was considering re barreling it to .366 Alaskan (9.3mm) anyone know who would do the conversion work for me? and has anyone had any experience with this conversion?

River Rat, on here has one on a necked up 300 Win Mag case, rather than the 7mm or 338 brass. It is a ferocious beast, driving 270 Speers over 3000 fps!

It is built on a SAKO, and is a beautiful rifle. I have shot it a few times, and it is quite accurate.

IMHO sticking to the factory cartridge makes the most sense. I am afraid that such drastic calibre enlargement might not be feasible b/c of the lesser barrel strenght due to steel removed. 308 Norma Mag and 338 Win Mag will perform on game as good if not better than .366 Alaskan with cheaper ammo, bullets, less recoil, more energy past 200yds and flatter trajectory.

The OP said "rebarrel" not "rebore". I doubt that a person could tell the difference between his 338 WM with 250 gr bullets or a 366 Alaskan with 250 gr bullets. Factory ammo will be possible with the 338, obviously, but everyone that has shopped a bit can tell you that 9.3 bullets are no more expensive than anything else comparable in size. But the 9.3 is so much cooler.
 
Sounds like a fun cartridge to me, but then I really like 9.3's.

I actually briefly toyed with the idea of a 338 win mag x 9.3 before as well, but moved on to other things.
 
I had a 9.3X62 and loved it, only thing was, it was a bit short on gas after about 250 yds so I figure this build should give me the extra reach I want to 300 plus yds. With a 286gr. Woodleigh bullet, this thing should work on anything from here to Africa.. and beyond...lol. As far as bullet cost, this ain't no varmint rifle, so a few bucks for a couple hundred rounds a year, plus the COOL factor, should make for a fun build.

Thinking :eek: I might use a single radius slop for the shoulder but for the life of me can't remember where I saw the info on the web..... If someone knows where to look, I would be grateful.

Anything driving a .366 bullet is cool, I have played with a couple and took a 2ton walrus bull with my CZ 550FS in 9.3 X 62. Couldn't have made him any deader. I love wildcats and who cares about factory ammo and custom reamers !! I don't know one reloader that hunts with factory ammo, do you? Obviously you're a reloader so who cares if factory ammo and reamers are available.
Like Ted said, I've done it lots, chamber with a factory 338 reamer with a 358 pilot and then finish up with a 9.3 neck and throat reamer, real easy. Then fireform 338 to make your cases.

The same could be done with a 7mm or 338 mag reamer, if that's the case one wanted to use.

Look at a 9.3x64. Good cartridge. Years ago I bought a 9.3x300 Win mag built on a P14 Enfield from Bob at Trail, fun gun. Swapped it for something, can't remember what. Sometimes I'm dumb as a stump. - dan
 
Hi could you have River Rat contact me I have tried to do a search for him but no luck. I may have a barrel builder that will do the job but not for 100% sure, so would like to keep my options open..

Also " Bob at Trail"?? Not sure who he is but more info is always a good thing.

I know this isn't a .358 Norma thread, but I was on Norma's load page and they showed 76.0gr (MAX) of Norma URP and a 250gr Partition giving 2845 fps! Wow - that is some stout load. Even the minimum load of 72.0gr gave 2710fps, which isn't exactly anything to sneeze at.

At any rate, that powder might do well in the .366 Alaskan too.
