375 Chatfield/Taylor finally finished

Can you buy 375/338 factory ammo in SJ?:D
You can't buy any 375 caliber ammo in SJ. No powder. No primers. Walmart and CTC are the only sources for ammo here.

Anything other than 30/06, 308, 303, 223, 22/250, 270 and maybe a couple other calibers and you into handloading anyways so shooting a wildcat for me is no big deal.

May as well gone for 375 Ruger then, I suppose..;)

great looking rifle and a very good cartridge.Great thing about the 375 taylor is 338 win brass is everywhere and fairly cheap.

I've had a 375/338 Taylor for years. An easy wildcat to do. Use 458WM brass and run into the die. A little faster than a 375H&H with less powder and on a standard length magnum action.

I built mine on a CZ (modern) Mauser action (had been trued), an Atinson/Marquart match barrel cut to 22" (I was going to go to 21") done to #2 contour. Timney trigger, Ruger rear sight, PMC banded front ramp, PMC barrel band and to save $$ used a B&C stock (painted flat black), pillar bedded. Had visions to someday go to Fajen wood but never did. Also used a 1.5x5 B&L.

As far as the shorter barrel...Only using medium burning powder (IMR4064), so don't need a long barrel. Because of this and the weight of the gun, recoil is (for example) a lot less than my 338WM or 300WM.

Shoots 270gr Hornady, 300gr Sierra, 300gr Partition realy well. I tried to get some lighter bullets to work, but results were not good.

I was planning on trying some Reloader15 or some Varget I have one hand. I have some H335 here as well, but it may be to fast.

Been raining here all weekend. Might try to get out tomorrow.

SO ......... are the Alaskans stainless or not?

.

From what I gather, the silver ones are stainless, the black ones were just coated cro-moly, but now might be coated stainless.

HM77RSPHAB: Corrosion resistant ion-bonded Diamondblack finished alloy barrel.
HM77RSPHHM: Stainless steel Hawkeye Matte barrel.

What Blargon said...

I do recall looking at the black coated Alaskans and thinking "that's exactly what I want, if they only came in stainless" and then a couple of weeks passed and Ruger released the stainless version, like mine.

I don't know if they are using stainless under the black coating nowadays, though.

....... so if I get it correctly, the early ones like yours were stainless and looked stainless and now the newer ones are dark matte in colour and we're not sure if they are SS or CM.

I think I'd prefer the SS version.

Nope, you are backwards...

1st came the African and Alaskan. The Alaskan was chromoly, with the "diamnond back" black finish. We will call it the Black Alaskan.

Shortly after came the Alaskan Stainless, which I bought.

I don't know if Ruger is still using the chromoly for the Black Alaskan or if they switched to stainless. From thier website, there is no mention of it.

SO when I said the Alaskan was ALL stainless, I meant the Alaskan Stainless that I own.

Clear as mud?:p

Clear as mud?:p
I think. That's why mine is both SS and CM to avoid this kind of confusion. :)

Added the Leupold. I like it better. It's been raining here all weekend and I've been working OT, so it doesn't look like a trip to the range is in the works. :(
