I have a win mod 70 375 h&h as a camp gun. Open sights and 270 horn sp bullets. I know this will take any bear but is a bit long for quick handling. Any suggestions on a better unit for the camper/atv?

Any ole big bore lever action will be good. I have a 450 I love it. A nice evening deer gun. You don't have to worry about them going far.

Storage legalities and reality aside, a 20" cylinder or IC choked, 12 ga., pump shotgun, with rifle sights, loaded with slugs.
Just remember that having a loaded firearm in or on any vehicle is illegal. Not a big deal in a camper, but it is on an ATV. It's covered on page 18 of the B.C. hunting regs.

One company did make a .375 H+H with an 18 inch barrel, I just can't remember who offhand. Get out your hacksaw!

You won't loose much velocity by shortening your .375. There's been a few guys here who have cut theirs to 20" for a loss of only 50 fps. If you shoot the rifle well and have confidence in it, why not just make it more user friendly?

Going on three spirings ago, I used my old Remigton Model 7 in .243... to cleanly harvest a black bear. The old guys in town said it was WAAAAAAY to small to get a bear. I shot a 2 year old black bear with one clean shot. He death balded and fell over. It blew away the men of the little town I was in.

I've heard that up North of 60, in Noth West Territories the most popular gun is a .243 and they take Caribou with it. Your choice... I agree that you have to be comfortable and confient. Bullet placement... Just be sure of your shot.

Good Luck can't wait to see the pics...

Ciao for now, Fran
