375 for spring bear ?

I have a 375 H&H coming and look to be going on a spring bear hunt. This gun will be my first in this calibre and I am quite looking forward to it, especially when I thought that it might serve as a good gun for this particular hunt. However, I am a 375 newbie and was wondering if this is a good choice for spring bear (or would a 308 or 7mmRM be more suitable) ? If the 375 would serve me when, what ammo should I look at ? I really do not want to start reloading for it so factory ammo would be preferred unless it leaves too much on the table....

Shoot it first. You may find the felt recoil is too heavy for you. You don't need a .375 H&H for any game in Canada. Certainly not black bears.
The .308 will take any game in North America. Use a 165 grain bullet.

That baby don't kick at all.:cool: But a 1.5 x5 leupold would be excellent. or even a 1.75 x 6 , a few good deals on ee.

With practice the recoil isn't bad at all, my wife has no problem with the 375.
Don't listen to the 375 is too much crap! The 375 is one of the very best elk,moose and bear calibers.The 308 will work, but you have the 375 now so use it, I would go with the factory 270gr ammo.If you know someone who reloads, you can really bring out the best of the 375, with bullets from 235gr and up.

I'm more comfortable with a .375 H&H then a .300 Win Mag or a .30/06 with larger bullets.
Dont let the naysayers scare you off.
The .375 is a fine hunting arm for all North American game.
 
I used a Sako 375H&H for years for everything from gophers to moose...

My bullet of choice was a 300gr Nosler Partition @ 2500fps.

When I first bought the rifle everyone warned me to hang on tight because the recoil would knock me over...

I flinched so hard at that first shot from anticipation of that cannon going off that I didn't hit the target at 25 yards.

After that I quickly sighted the rifle in ending up with 3 shot clover leaf groups @ 100 yards because the recoil isn't anything like what I was warned about.

When 375H&H bullet hits an animal like a deer/bear or a moose the meat damage is almost non-existant like the old saying goes "You can eat right up to the hole"...

I say use that gun and don't worry about what those nay-sayers that don't understand how awesame a 375 H&H is.

If I could only have 1 rifle I would be hard pressed not to have a 375H&H...

I bought 200 rounds of this just to break in my 375 and to do a bunch of shooting before reloading the TSX's. After recently pulling some out of a pile of newspaper packed very tight, I wouldn't hesitate at all to use them on a black bear.

Cant beat the price either.......
 
I bought one a couple years ago, didn't have a chance to shoot anything with it until this year. Surprisingly flat shooting, I used 270gr interlock. It was a whitetail, the shot was 325 yards and obviously was a pass through, didn't hit any bone except a rib or two, the exit hole was very large so it makes me wonder if I had hit some real bone that the bullet would have vaporised???

I wouldn't shoot a bear with those 270 gr Hornady interlocks. At 325 yards on a deer I would have expected the bullet to stay together better.

The nice thing about big holes equals big blood. Actually It was more of a chunk trail than a blood trail.

Its a great caliber and I am seriously considering selling my 338 and just using the 375 H&H
 
Federal loads up a 250gr Trophy bonded bear claw. Which is a bullet that I really like the performance of and they shoot quite well out of the couple 375's that I have.

That would be my choice for a nice bear load.
