.375 H&H for Deer...

Not sure on the stock design on the rem 798, but with a good stock shape even a lightweight 375 isn't bad. some years ago I had a lightweight 375 put together by corlane, its weight was just over 61/2 lbs. It wasn't to unpleasant to shoot.Any of the 375's all great around calibers,I'm putting together a 61/2 lb 375 ruger shortly.a 250rg sierra BTSP loaded to 2500-2600 would make a great deer bullet as would the 225-235gr bullets

I loaded 300gr Partitons @ 2450fps - 2500fps in my 375 H&H...

I have shot moose/deer/black bear and after I lent the rifle to my buddy that took it to Africa and shot numerous large & small animals with it I ended up selling it to him because it meant more to him than me after the several trips he took it on.

Anyway everything that this rifle/cartridge/load hit dropped if not instantly within 50 yards.

The awesome thing about this load is that there was no hydrolic damage to any of the meat as the saying goes you can eat right up to the hole.

I am also reading that some are saying that their 375 rifles are heavier this is not my experience with this rifle which was a Sako Hunter IV with a Leupold Vari X 111 2.5X - 8X scope it barely made 9 lbs.

I have to ask; please excuse me if this a dumb question. Why is the .375 so meat friendly?

On the springbok, I used a 300gr Swift A-frame at 2550'/s. Most shots, including the springbok, were pass-throughs, but the few bullets I recovered were beautifully expanded with 80% to 90% weight retention. In other words, the bullets did not disintegrate, which is what causes meat damage.

My son in law gave me a custom .375 H&H, based on a Sako action, L61R I believe, nice wood and topped with a Leupold VX III, 2.5-8. I love it! One of the bullets that has worked well so far is the Hornady 300gr RN IB. Great accuracy and excellant pass through penetration. ;)I guess that's because all I've done with it so far is punch paper.:p One of these days..........

Johnn Peterson,
If you like those 300 grain Interbonds, buy lots. They are discontinued, WSS was selling them cheaper than the Interlocks if they have any left. I'm using them for plinking now, since they are about the cheapest thing around.

Thanks for the heads up on the Interbonds. I've just sent an e-mail to my Daughter in Sherwood Park AB to pick me up some at P&d or WSS. Thanks again.

I shot a deer 2 years ago with me 375 Epstein, did way less damage than my 270 did in the same area on the deer.
I have found that with most large diameter bullets on the slower velocity side.

My CZ 602 doesn't like the lighter bullets, 220gr group 4-5" Interlock RN 300 gr gave a tightest group of .375" at 100. I think this rifle has a long leade so others may not be so bad with short bullets. 260 gr Accubonds are the best all rounders, the group opens to an inch or so but flies flatter. In spite of what many non magnum owners will tell you, this cartridge will make up for poor bullet placement to a point. I've never seen a deer do a death run after being hit in the boiler room with my H&H. It is a heavy #####, scoped and loaded with six rounds she's 11 pounds. For the record, I'll probably go back to hunting deer with a .308 next year and just use the "Elephant gun" for moose and elk.

Just showed my wife your post, it made her morning.;) They met in AB at Ft. Mac when our daughter was on a R.M.O.T. practicum there.
We're looking forward to them visiting us this Christmas, with our new Granddaughter.:D

Dearstalker, I was in your shoes a couple of years ago. I filled the need with a .375 H&H Rem 700 XCR. It weighs about 8.5lbs with a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8 scope. It comes with factory sights and I have QR rings on the gun as well. I currently shoot 270gr TSX's for hunting, and 270gr RN for range.Ballistically it is almost identical of a 30-06.From a recoil stand point, I decribe it to my buddies as a 12ga shotgun shooting 3" slugs. More of a push than a jab. I would recommend this caliber to anyone. A great classic round.

Just my 2 cents. Scott
