375 HH mag

I have the excellent VX III 2.5 - 8 x36 on all my heavier recoiling rifles.
So far, nary a hitch of any kind, and very good in almost any situation.
Dave.

I have a VX3 4.5-14X40mm B&C reticle scope on my 375RUM have no issues shooting to 500 yards on game when I am shooting my 260gr Accubond @ 3020fps loads.

Probably don't have any trouble hitting targets at 25 yards with the scope on 4.5X, either.

But .375's are SUPPOSED to have low power scopes or irons or both! :)

I don't think that I have ever needed a high power scope on any of my 375s.
My 375 Ruger wore a 2.5-8 Leupold and I never cranked it over 6 power so eventually I swapped it off for a 1.5-6X42 Swarovski and put the 2.5-8 on my 9.3X62.
The 375 H&H has worn different scopes over the years from an old M7-4X Leupold, a 3.5-10 Leupold and currently a 1.5-5 Leupold so I don't see any reason why I should be criticised for my scope choices, heck I even tried a 12X Leupold on it just for fun.
I say put on whatever you want and don't slag the other guys choice because you wouldn't use it..

I have an old Leupold M8 4x with 28mm objective on my 375 Ruger and so far I like it but do wish it had more magnification when I'm at the range punching paper and trying get a load developed for it. For hunting purposes it's all I'll likely need but I am tempted to try my Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on it. I think a Leupold VX2 2-7×33 would be a great scope for it at a reasonable price and may look at going down that road as well. The smaller objective on the 4x on my rifle now has made me appreciate smaller scopes that sit a bit closer to the barrel. Wish I had more money so I could try all the options out there : )

As for iron sights, I'm glad my rifle has them, but mostly just for aesthetics because I like the look of the safari style sights that come on the Rugers, unlikely that I'll actually hunt with them.

I have iron sights on pretty much all my hunting rifles. 'What's the fascination'?.. I guess if you are old or have weak eyes...scopes are a necessity. Me...not so much for most requirements. Rifle is lighter...faster to get on to the target and surprisingly accurate...particularly in good light... without a scope and rings imo. I dont know what the fascination is with 'overscoping' a rifle in Canada is?!?! The "2.5-14 x 50" approach to big game hunting scopes is just too funny for words in my mind. Not sure where people are hunting big game legally where that kind of light gathering might be useful in Canada...or at what ranges... But if it makes you feel like a better hunter...go for it! Those of us suggesting iron sghts to the OP...simply know how well they can perform for an average marksman....without resorting to a scope for every situation.

I admit I am old and my eyes are not as good as they once were. I shot a bear 3 weeks ago at about 70 yds at one half hour after sunset (legal limit) with my VX 6 1-6. I would never had made that shot with irons, even with 20 year old eyes. A scope will give you an extra 30 min of hunting in the evening. All hunters will know this, young and old.

Don't you use the triangle like its a chevron; your aiming point being just the tip of the triangle, or is it that too much buffalo is blocked from your view behind the triangle? I've been thinking about an ACOG for my AR, so I'm interested in your observation. I get what you mean by too bright though, the illuminated reticle on my Nightforce 1-4X is too much once the brightness setting goes much past half way.

That's exactly how I used the triangle and it should have worked like a charm. Instead, it was something about the way my eye sees the triangle and the brightness. It drew my eye to centre subconsciously. It's hard to explain but on my buffalo it didn't have any significant effect. I was well rested on the cross sticks and, although it was a bit over 100 yards, I hit the bull perfectly where Kevin Robertson would put the red dot on his photos. Maybe that's the nature of an 8" vital zone, you don't notice an inch here or there, especially when you shoot something a football field away. But when I stomped my baboon at about 40 yards rather than hit him through the armpits, I hit him straight through the base of the skull. Now, perhaps that was partly due to the midrange trajectory of the 300gr DGX that was zeroed for 100 yards. But I still think that the brightness of the triangle drew my eye upwards. My eye naturally centered itself on the triangle, the same way it would in a peep site.

I love the theory of the reticle. But if the lighted portion was dimmer and smaller I thin kit would be hard to beat. That's just me. I turn the panel lights on my dash down to barely visible at night. I find bright lights too distracting. if I was shooting either of my Nightforce NXSs at low light they would probably be too bright for me too.

Same as the low power scopes, I guess. Someone told them it was supposed to be so, so it is. ;)

What's the fascination of scopes? Then again I tend to get in close so long range shooting was never a fascination with me. I bet there are lots of folk out there with scopes because someone told THEM it was supposed to be so...
