Aka as the 9.5×57ms. Could one simply rebore a 9.3x57 barrel and rechamber it?
I realize its costs wont equal the returns over other similar cartridges but i like to be different. Im selling off some gear and tools that never really get used often and im always searching for another fun black bear rifle.
.375 caliber 270 gr round nose at 2250fps sounds just about perfect in a slim stocked mauser with express sights to match the wording of 375 Rimless Nitro Express 2 1/4" stamped on the barrel

A #3 medium sporter contour is about as small as is recommended for a .375, so your 8mm barrel should have a muzzle diameter no smaller than .630" if you intend to rebore it to that caliber, but fluting is inadvisable.

I wouldnt flute it. I was just thinking if i rebored it would save me having to buy new sights and having them installed. Poor mans rigby is kinda the idea i had. Husqvarna 98 action rebore the barrel and get a fancy grained laminated stock. It would be just for walks in bear country timber and hunting over bait. All short range hunting.

Just use it in 9.3X57. It will do everything you want and more. :)

I have used both cartridges. The 9.5 was in a Mannlicher Schoenauer take down. Paul Rogan, the publisher of Canadian Access now has it. Or, at least he bought it from me years ago.

There is virtually no difference in performance on game. If anything, most 9.3 bullets are well-designed for the velocities you will get from the 9.3X57. They expand and penetrate better than .375 bullets designed for the magnum cases will in the 9.5X57.

My reckoning as well, and I don't mind the gouge too much on Norma brass either.:)

Im not sure about the re bore, but I can comment on the 9.5x57. Its a hell of a good close range bear thumper, I shoot 220 grain hornady's in mine. I use iron sights, so I'm limited to about 150 yards, so I'm not sure how it is on longer shots. Iv never checked the bullet speed, but I run about mid charge using imr 3031 (iirc). This bear I took at about 120 yards, broadside, the bullet passed through, when he tuned towards me, the second hit in the chest, found the bullet down near his vent, seemed to have good penetration, the hornady 220gr did a fantastic job. I do have some 260gr partitions I am going to try out soon, but the 220's seem to work great.

The 9.5X57 is a good cartridge, but so is the 9.3X57... really this proposed project is largely splitting hairs. I have done plenty of hair splitting (ie. My 7.62X57 Medium Mauser), but for the cost of this project you should realize some sort of gain somewhere... I can't think of one.

Right on!

I had a MS 1910 takedown. Now I have a Husqvarna M98 in 9.3.

I like to be different. A 3006 will do everything i need. But wheres the fun in that

Me too... but there is a tipping point. I justified the 7.62X57 by acknowledging that I love the X57 case and pairing it with the plethora of 30 call bullets (including thousands in my shop), made some sense... not alot, considering that I have both 7X57 and 8X57, but some... enough to jump... and that one required a custom reamer and custom Whidden dies. I have done a whack of "crazy-azzed" projects on the H&R SB2 Handi rifle platform, because they were fairly straightforward jobs, most done as two or three barrel combo sets. So I get it... as long as it makes sense to you.

I was never lucky enough to get one of your hnr sets. They generally sold pretty quick. The ones i would have been interested in anyway
I hate downloading a cartridge and if i hunt bears in the spring well muskol and scopes dont mix so an open sighted gun is a good idea to me. This project will be solely for the purpose of close range black bear hunting where i dont need a full size 375hh to carry around. A good old cup and core bullet between 220 and 250grs clipping by at around 2000 to 2200 fps should be just the tool im after. Ill end up adding a 375hh eventually

Yep- this rings common sense simply because of the available options....... IMO.
i did buy into the .366 Family already owning a .358 Member but that was simply due to wanting Whelen performance in a lightweight rifle aka the Tikka 9.3x62.......

Ted mentions the designed bullets to do what you intend, an 9.3x57 is still cool as schit!

if gunsmithing was so expensive here, an new barrels, i should really have my 9.3 into something along the lines of a 8mm upto or 9.3 x 57 just because im a lttle dude an its a big case..
on the flip side, i think we are going to do Buffalo again this year... whelen can stay at home, 9.3x62 will get some 286grainers an pretty relaxed load of 2208. (varget)

save yer coin, go 9.3x57 ??

.35 Rem, .356 Win, .358 Win... just saying... any of those in a lever action will fulfill those criteria. I would be looking for a 94AE in .356.

It's amazing how cheap a 9.3x57 rifle from tradex can be. I'm sure one will end up in my locker once I get a real job.

I got mine back when they were $300. for a nice one. I bedded the action, installed a Timney trigger and freshened up the stock finish.
Love the way these lightweight thumpers handle & carry. I shoot hardcast 280 gr in 'er. No worries on performance for big game at sensible ranges.

They are a decent looking rifle. Id like some nice highly figured turkish walnut or new zealand hardwood and a case colored action. Flip up night sight bead. Rear express leaf sights. Nice traditional lines without the rigby or mauser diplomat pricetag
