375 Ruger - anyone heard anything about this?

Well as long as YOU discussed it todd, i guess there's no reason for anyone else to :D

So - tell me about it oh knowledgable one. Has anyone actually shot one or heard from someone who has?

I haven't even heard of gun writers getting one yet Foxer. IIRC they should be in the states for spring 07. If I was betting I'd see whe'll be lucky to see them before next hunting season.

There's rumours that it was developed from the Brenneke (sp?) cartridges. It may have stolen some ideas, but I read somewhere that it is a brand new cartridge design by Hornaday. Its basically an H and H volume cartridge but shorter obviously. It will obviously be very powerfull. At both ends..

They just went on RUGERS product list along with the Hawkeye in 358WIN.Should be available shortly.I am told I will have mine early in the new year.

Everyone, including Hornady, keeps lauding "more powerfull than the H&H". When I look at Hornady's own published balistics for the two, I see the H&H being marginally better (Heavy Magnums of course). I guess if Hornady says it is so, it must be?;)

Interesting cartridge though.

The 375 Ruger is listed to do 2660fps with a 300 gr bullet, with a 20" barrel...

do a search for the 375 Dakota. Same thing, more or less.

You can also do the same thing by shortening the RUM case to fit a standard action. This is essentially a Dakota. Not sure what the RUGER is based off but assume a very similar case.

Has to be very similar to get the volume right. If this RUGER is a unique case, we be wildcatting that to no end shortly.

I wonder when the beltless 7mm, 30, and 338's will start popping up with this case. Very nice, very nice indeed...

This case will be an almost direct replacement for the belted magnums. Why they just didn't go .532" base diameter I will never understand. However, 10thou is unlikely to cause much issues with functioning or feeding.

Wow, according to Dave Scovill, it appears that the .375 Ruger is based on the .30 Newton case!

Here is yet another example of how Charles Newton, that poor, genius s.o.b. from the WWI era, was about a century ahead of his time. It's like Vincent Van Gogh dying penniless and 100 years later his paintings sell for $100 Million each.

Yes indeed. I think in honour of Charles the energy of the 375 Ruger loads should be expressed in metric. Instead of ft/lbs, Kilograms per square metre should be used, (the later more commonly called Newtons). ;)

the later more commonly called Newtons

Great. So how many figs does it take to kill a moose then, exactly? :D

I wondered about that - i mean, we need another 30 like we need a hole in the head, but a 338 struck me as interesting - i wonder what kind of ballistics you'd get, and what the recoil'd be like?

The .30 already popped up. That was the .30 Newton, the case upon which this .375 is supposedly based. It was created back when Ford's Model T was the great new development, and people were flocking to see a new sensation called moving pictures...

and...? The H&H is listed at 2705 with the same bullet. Are we assuming that the short barrel makes it more powerful? More efficient, maybe, but the math still puts the good old Holland on top.

Cheers

Who the hell would want to shoot one with a 20" pipe anyway? I wish the barrel on my #1 was about 4" longer!

A shorter barrel does not make it "more powerful" of course. Longer barrels = more velocity- most of the time.:p A 20 inch barrel is favoured by alot of guys that use thier big guns as a working rifle, and it's not a bad idea at all, since they dont' seem to give up much in velocity.

Barnes Manual

2600- High Energy Load

Hornady

*claims* 2705fps in thier *HEAVY MAGNUM* ammo. They don't list barrel length.

I'd liek to see someone actually shoot that Hornady ammo over a chrono.

I've never got much past 2600 fps with a 300 gr bullet in the 375 H&H, with 24" barrels.

I thik that the 2705fps data is optimistic, if you know what I mean:p
