375 Ruger Factory ammo

Gatehouse;

You may feel free to have the last word this evening.........all that crying, and following them sheep around last night has me exhausted tonight. I'm turning in early. I think my sheets are finally dry!

All hail the "TRUE KING" with the hundred year reign. Long may he reign!!!!

100 years old, not surprised that the dethroned king wants his bed. The NEW KING stands poised and ready, at all times. I am sure you will enjoy your dream of some bonny lad. ;)

I was looking at a H&H round tonight, and comparing ti the NEW KING. Then I looked to a 303 compared to a 308. It was interesting to see how far we have come in cartridge development. I'm a big fan of all cartridges, old and new, but there is no mistaking that the more modern designs of cartridges are far more efficient and superior. I love the 303 British for nostalgic reasons, but once I got a modern bolt action I retired the SMLE quickly. But when Ruger came out with their #1's in 303 British, I knew I had to have one. i always *liked* the Ruger #1, but I didn't see much reason to get one chambered for a cartridge that was readily available in a bolt gun, so the 303 #1 made lots of sense to me. It is always so funny for me to see how many people feel the need to bash new cartridges. Every one of the favorites was NEW at one time. And I am sure that some hunters talked about them and got sand in their manginas back then too. :)

I like the NEW KING,becuas eof it's obvious superiority over the H&H, I like WSM's because they are cool, but I also love the 100+ year old 45 Colt and 303 British...and all the rest of the cartridges I like were created decades ago, mostly before i was born. its always funny to see hunters get unhinged about some *newfangled* cartridge. It's just perfectly hilarious. ;)

Hey Gatehouse, you want to read some new fangled cartridge bashing just pick up anything written by Elmer Keith. The KING of the fudds............and supreme luddite.

I sure agree with that. He was a real Fudds Fudd :)

I think the only time he was okay with a new cartridge was when the 44 mag was introduced. He wasn't even a fan of the sacred 30-06 cartridge, although I can't say I blame him. :)

Well ya, he's the guy who designed the 44 Mag and talked S+W into building the gun and Rem into making the ammo. The only reason he didn't bash it. I think he was okay with the '06 from jackrabbits to coyotes but certainly not enough for big game!! Maybe antelope but even that was getting a little big for that puny 30 cal bullet.

Elmer Keith... HELL I WAS THERE!!!

Cheers
Jay

;)Got it. One of the best of the man and at a gun show in Kalispel Montana, on my second opportunity of meeting him, I added that book, signed, to my 'meager' collection.

;)Admittedly, being a fan, I have a few other of his books that grace my book shelves in addition to the two in the photo. There's also
  • Big Game Rifles
  • Keith, an Autobiography
  • Elmer Keith's Big Game Hunting
  • Rifles For Big Game
  • Shotguns by Keith
There are a few more I need to complete the collection, ;)all in good time:D.

Meeting the man in the mid 70's at his home in Salmon Idaho and spending the day chatting with him I consider the highlight of my days and interest in firearms, shooting and hunting.

I have a 378, had a 375 H&H which I liked, and now have a 416 Ruger. One of these days will pick up a 375 Ruger. Why? Because I like the feel of the Ruger and find it handles well in heavy bush and I really like the Hogue stock.

Yeah, it's funny that with all his experience he couldn't figure out that a 30-06 would kill stuff. It's great for all of us that he got the 44 Mag started, but I still find it odd that he embraced the 44 mag as a big game cartridge while at the same time couldn't accept the 30-06 or 270. Granted, bullets were different but shot placement should always rule the day, and good shot placement with a standard bullet would work fine. In reading much of Keith's stuff, I always thought he could have been better if he opened his mind a bit. I recall Ross Seyfried saying the same, and he hung with Keith quite a bit IIRC. I guess it's the danger of only looking a things one way.

Different man in a different time. He was very good friends with PO Ackley and yet a very different mindset, and a very different education base as well. Unfortunately I came along too late to meet either of these two. I have friends who were good friends with both these men, but as I said, never actually got to meet them. Why not? (Ted) knew Ackley quite well and my very good friend Bevan King spent weeks with PO learning how to make barrels and other neat sh!t. They have both related many stories but it's just not the same as hearing it from the MAN himself.
According to those that I know, who knew Keith personally, he suffered from a serious case of SMS (small man syndrome) which explains his almost obcessive single mindedness with large calibers, and his overall attitude, which comes through vividly in his writings.
