What would you recommend. My criteria.
1.Price, under 600 or a tad higher. Reasonable.
2.Rugged.
3.max range would be 400 yards, for a comfortable range shot as it drops a lot around this yardage.
4.I'll be hunting bison and moose, so, gotta be able to stand -40 for the worst case conditions.
5.Easy to range in the receptacle, 100 yards, 200 and so on.
Pleas tell me you suggestions, thanks for any input.
Cheers,Patrick.

Leupold vari-xIII (or whatever the hell they call them now)1.5-5.

BUT before you scope it, shoot the hell out of it with the iron sights and make friends with it. Then the scope will become a luxury, instead of a necessity.

So when you say Newbie, you have owned other rifles before right?

I am just picturing this being your first rifle, and your first shot, followed by an incredible flinch problem that can't be corrected by even the finest scope out there.

Like others have said I wouldn't even be looking at scopes till your shoulder develops a callus! ;)

Sorry for the confusion, new to the rifle and low power scopes. The optimum for this rifle is 200 yards, that is the flat point of trajectory of the 270 grain round from Hornady. So, that's where I would try to zero the scope at. With that in mind, still the same scope vx3?

I put a Leupold VXII 2-7X33 on my FN Mauser chambered in .375 Ruger. It's a nice lighweight, compact choice with good clear optics and useful out to about 300 meters.

I used Talley steel rings and bases.

Patrick,

mine is now with a VXII 3-9x40 with quick detach mount. but the first suggestion is a good one too.

in my opinion the 375 ruger is very well above 200 yards even if i prefer shooting at lower distance for hunting ...

Myself find that it is hard to top a S&B 1.1X4 Short dot, light, clarity is top, aquisition is soooo easy, these day it is topping my Benelli mr-1... JP.

I use a 2.5-8x36 Leupold on mine. The same scope or the 2-7 model would be my choice. A ballistic reticle would make it perfect. The 375 Ruger is mu h more than a 200 yard rifle.

Thanks for all the comments guy's, I'm looking at all mentioned scopes. What range is comfortable considering bullet drop to reach out and bag something, but is to much for your comfort. I will be shooting it in a couple months, but don't want to overspend on ammo.
Once again, thanks for all reply's. This helps immensely.
Patrick.
