The new Ruger 375 Magnum has maybe over-hyped the data to put a shine and a spin on their 375 magnum. With the shorter neck, heavier bullets must be seated deeper making less room for powder and producing velocities less than the -- "375 H&H"

check it out, scroll down to "About That 200 FPS"

I do like the M77 Hawkeye -- it was my choice in a survey for "The New Rifleman's Rifle" -- and would be my choice for a brand new, store bought rifle.

The guy that wrote that article did so without ever actually loading, firing and chronoing the rifle...

Everyone that owns a 375 Ruger and has posted on various shooting forums about velocity has said that the factory ammo is producing the velocities as specified by Hornady.
:)

I thought the goal was to match h&h ballistics from a 20 inch barrel? either way most articles I read they were doing just that.

Gate,
Have you located any brass for yours yet or shot it yet?

The article might of been worth reading it the guy had actually shot a .375 Ruger through a chronograph. Basically he was just blowing smoke and getting on the anti .375 bandwagon early.

Also, that article was written quite some time ago. On the bottom of it, he says "Part II - ammo and loads etc coming soon"

Did he do a part II?
:p

Don't put too much into what these gun magazine writers pen. Remember who supplies them with their guns and ammo and promotes their hunting trips. Remeber that these gun makers also fill their mags with ads that keep the mags going. Remeber Jim Zumbo, they dropped him like a lead fart once he stated something that was "out of line".

A little story for ya: Back in 1986, I was elk hunting is some pretty remote eatern slopes wilderness. An outfitter was camped about 1/2 mile from our camp. One morning, I rode up to a ridge top to do some glassing. I ran into the guide, we glassed together. In our conversation, he informed me that his client was a big wig from Pittsburgh who worked for Petersen's Hunting mag. The fat bastard was sleeping in the tall grass while the outfitter was looking for "his" elk. We spotted a herd bedded down in the thick timber. He agreed that he wouldn't wake him up and let me stalk my elk. Bottom line is, I didn't get what I was after :( but neither did the fat bastard. :D

I edited to add this: Have you ever seen a hunting or gun mag state that the gun or ammo that they were "field testing" was a real piece of useless crap?....I read a lot of them, and i never have.

And you won't either, yet alot of people hang on every word...soon you'll be reading that you need a .375 with nosler solid copper, plastic tipped, MRX, triple shock, partition bullet at $3 each or you won't put down Mr. Whitetail. People buy into it, Companies love it, retailers love it, and alot of users on this site do to.

You have to pick and choose gunwriters..Most I ignore, some I pay attention too.:)

This was explained once by John Barsnes:

You dont' see really negative articles because if the writer finds a problem wiht a product,t hey send it back to the maker and see if they can fix it...Or they just won't write about it.:)

I know a couple of things for sure in this H&H vs Ruger thing, I've had some trouble finding the H&H brass and while searching, enquired about the Ruger brass. I did get 250 rounds of H&H, but finding Ruger brass is going to be a chore. Other than the fact that I don't know #### about either caliber's down range performance, I plan to make my H&H bark loud and clear on my Yukon hunt. And in all good sportsmanship, I wish Gatehouse to get the brass he needs and have all the success that this new Ruger thingy claims. :)

I've got 100 cases..I'm good for now, but I will add 200 or so more in the next little while.:)

Brass supply shoudln't be an issue in Canada by this time next year. :)

Anyone got a link to .375 ruger info? I want to read and compare it to .375 H + H, and of course, the .375 Ackley improved.
