My old skin is nearly 69 yrs. and tough as leather but I still put the flame suit on, here goes :

As some of you may remember, a few years ago I jumped on the 375 Ruger bandwagon like many others and unlike nearly all others I had issues with both rifles an African and a very early Alaskan not to mention problems with the Hornady brass I had bought from different sources.
After a great deal of frustration with both rifles and brass I parted out everything.
When I aired my problems on here a lot of name -calling ensued and for the first time I resorted to using our Ignore option ( Thank goodness there is one ) not because of a title hung on the Ruger cartridge.

Since that time I have had a great deal of correspondence with Hornady concerning the brass issue and because of several samples of the brass I used it was determined that the cases in question were in fact softer than should be the norm.
Thanks to our numerous discussions I was fully reimbursed in brass and money.... a sincere Thanks to Hornady.

Now I have a bunch of 375 Ruger brass and no rifle... what to do ?
I really like the Ruger products and can easily fill a large safe with my current Ruger rifles and handguns, however I do not like the new 375 Ruger options as compared to the original.
And then one evening I saw a Howa 1500 carbine in what else but 375 Ruger and already having a tackdriver Vanguard S2 I thought.. why not ?
A phone call to Clay @ Prophet River, a few short weeks later and I now have a really sharp little stainless 20" carbine in 375 Ruger.
Leupold took care of the mounts and it wears a Swarovski 1.5-6X42 glass ( worth more than the rifle ! ).

Handloads feed and chamber totally smooth and tomorrow is break-in day for it, so after its had a few rounds through it we will see what it likes.
Oh, and for the purists its a push-feed and although drilled and tapped for, it has no irons.
I have dozens of CRF rifles as well as a bunch of push-feeds but in the final analysis I would rather have a push-feed rifle that cycles than a controlled- feed that doesn't. As for the lack of irons, I will never be close enough to anything that bites back to worry, but that's just me.

Looking forward to your thoughts... or am I ??

So there were issues with the brass, these have been resolved but in the meantime you sold the original Ruger rifle(s), and don't care for the current Ruger offering, but now you have found a Howa rifle and are going to try it with the improved brass?

It sounds like a bit of a bumpy road to say the least, but I admire your tenacity in getting this caliber to work properly.

Speaking for myself I would welcome a report on (a) is the new brass satisfactory, (b) how to distinguish between good and bad brass prior to firing it, and (c) how does the Howa shoot?

Glad to hear you're back in the .375 Ruger game. I'm sure you won't be disappointed this time. Can't wait to read your report.

I do Thank-you for your interest and will provide a fair and unbiased response after a few trips to the range.
With respect to your questions concerning the brass I don't think a person can tell by simply looking at the brass prior to loading / shooting to be able to tell if it is good or not.
The problem brass in question would not hold a primer after one firing and sometimes two, also case stretching seemed to be excessive with some cases.
Please note this was with much less than max loads.

Again Thanks.

as i m of those that find some brass for you im happy to hear you re back in the bandwagon. noboby will hang you this time: it is just an howa ...

maybe you will try the doug trick the 300 win mag brass....

enjoy your time.

Phil

Yes Phil, I think I'll try the 300 WM trick once it gets sorted out.
I have a large box of new 300 Win. Mag brass but no Win. Mag rifle.
That's called hoarding.... isn't it ??

OHHHHHH Kevan.............you are nothing if not tenacious. Hope you have better luck third time around............If you want to try some W-W 300 WM converted cases just let me know and I'll pop you out a few, if you don't have some already.

Good luck with your load development and range sessions... I am sure the "usual suspects" will show up here shortly...

The NEW KING chambered Howa rifles seem to be fairly popular with local hunters in Africa, and are getting put to good use in the field.

Relatively few people had issues with the brass but good to see that Hornady looked into it. I continue to not have any issues with any of the brass lots I purchased.

I am sure you will enjoy your Howa NEW KING and look forward to a range report.

Kevan you are not the only one with 300 brass without a rifle.

Doug not begging but if you had some aside for the next you are in town i wont mind either ....

Stubbern like a mewl...................

Trial and error is what it's all about.
Some are willing to share the lumpy road endeavors.

Thanks Kevan.

Keep this thread current..........

Man o man, Great tenacity to keep at it in regards to the Godlike offering from Ruger. I have a Howa lightning in .300winmag and no matter how much I have been in financial trouble (wife finding out about purchases and living on the couch until I sell a gun to replace the funds.............) I cannot sell it. It is as smooth as any Tikka I've ever owned and shoots probably my best groups among my hunting guns. Let us know how it shoots. (My Alaskan Ruger in .375 was a shooter from the start, with all the weights of bullets I've tried...............235gr speers, 250 ttsx, 270 tsx and my beloved 300 gr tsx. It even shoots the hornady 300gr dangerous game hornady bullets to the same point of impact as the others. )
I still get laughs from my lesser knowledgable friends when I say I am gonna be using a .375 on a caribou or deer, but once they see that you can usually eat the meat right up to the bullet hole, then they start asking more questions.

Today was a break-in day, no load testing.
All three-shot groups were clean and fire, that is cleaning after every shot fired.
They went 3.2, 4.1, 4.5, and 1.6 inches respectively.
Wasn't the best day for me as there was a crosswind at the range gusting from 22 kph to 40 kph along with sometimes heavy rain showers and I was fighting the after effects of yesterdays chemo infusion.
My load consisted of 250 gr. Sierra BTs ( a bullet I don't like ) and a mid-range charge of Varget.
Hunting loads will probably be either 270 gr. Barnes or Hornady and 300 gr. Kodiak.
One more break-in trip to the range and then some serious load work.
The little rifle handles very well, has a nice light trigger and all told is comfortable to shoot.
I will probably keep the Hogue stock on it for one simple reason...... can't afford anything better !

Welcome back to the club!

Thank-you Troutseeker, I have never left the H&H club but theres no reason why I can't belong to both eh ?
So far the new batch of brass seems to be better than the original stuff I had issues with.
And as for the rifle, I'm very impressed after one trip to the range..

To me it sounds like if you had just stuck to a 375H&H you wouldn't have had any issues in the first place.

Sorry guys couldn't help myself...
