375 Ruger vs 378 weatherby is it worth the extra $$$

...Anyway Slamfire, to clarify my earlier statement, I do know for a fact that a 26" barreled 378 Weatherby will drive a 300 gn Nosler Partition above 3100 fps SAFELY, maybe it is an "outside the lines" load when compared to the existing manuals, but I KNOW for a fact it can be SAFELY achieved....

When I get my 416 WBY we will compare notes. You da man. :)

Wow... beautiful rifle! Nicely done... what did you start with for the donor rifle? Thanks for the picture.

P.S - I have a stainless MKII build in progress in .358 Win... and a similar one to yours in .375 Ruger.

It was a 7 rem mag canoe paddle. Found the stock on here from BC, found a Shillen barrel blank off another site. 23"
Its the second MK2 stainless Ive put into a 375 Ruger case, the previous was a 9.3/375 Ruger. Duplication overboard here.
Needed a 23" 416 Ruger too. Like a hole in the head :) Did this off an old 338 win mag tang safety instead. I think its my favorite out of all three though.

As soon as this M77 MKII Stainless .358 is done, the .375 Ruger on a stainless MKII is the next project. With a couple .350 RM's and Whelens, I need the .358 Win like a hole in the head, but I love the cartridge and in a stainless MKII it will see the field alot.

All true things, but the vast majority of shooters can't properly handle a 300 Winchester so to settle them in behind a real head-turner like the 378 Weatherby is borderline criminal. I doubt that 5% of the hunting population could even be taught to shoot a 378 marginally, let alone well.

But, but , they can learn to go broke in the wallet learning how to do it , cant they ?
Nothing shoots flatter, hits harder than a Weatherby ;)
Tight Groups,
Rob

Yeah I have a couple of nice SA MK2 Ruger stocks (I think I got one from you) that are going to get a build soon. Was thinking a nice 24" 260 Rem if I can find a cheap stainless MK2 action. I like the 358 Win idea. Is it easy to resize 308 brass to get there or are the necks too thin?
I don't like to mess around with brass much anymore. That's why the 416 Ruger is such a peach. Buy it, load it, shoot it. Magnum performance with a nice 0.540" bolt face and 3.35" OAL. Mind you the velocity may leave some wanting more...

Yup... you got that SA stock from me. Ruger built the 22" "R" model in .260, they are not exactly rare, but I have been looking for one for awhile.

I don't have the 416 Weatherby, nor have I seen a need for one as I have the forefather (416 Rigby) in a 602 Brno. I haven't done hardly anything with my 416 though as it needs to be bedded into a new stock and it's on the list with all the other things I haven't gotten around to yet......Still haven't finished the lighting in my gunsmith shop yet.......it too is on the list. I sure wish I had the giddyup and stamina I had in my 30's, so much more would be completed by now. But seeing as how I'm double that now, I'll just keep picking away at it.........
You have a real love affair going on with the 416 bore, I've noticed. I took a 416 Taylor for my first hunt in Africa, it worked but I found it lacking on Cape Buffalo. To be fair though it was in fact the use of solids that created the issues not the use of the 416 Taylor. Was planning to take my 450 Ackley, but it decided to shed it's stock 2 weeks before the trip so I scurried about and got some bullets and loads for my Taylor instead.

the 416 taylor is still one of my favorite rounds, mild recoil and stomps moose and bears... yup I'm aware so does the 7mm/08 :)
I use to load my 416 taylor up with 350gr speer magtips at about 2550fps, I really should build another one... the ruger makes more sense but I'm partial to the taylor

It takes many people a long time to learn that there is no "better" chambering.
It is all a sliding scale of negatives and positives.

I too think the OP has made a very sound choice, the 378 just isn't for everyone. However the 375 Ruger has very good ballistics for what one will be doing with it, and it is considerably easier to master. And let's all face it......it really is ALMOST as good as one of my all time favorites.......The .375 Holland & Holland Belted Magnum.

Good choice and from a man with the experience who would know.

Truth be told, I just bought the 378 Wby because I had never owned one and I just wanted to play with it and see if the recoil was as bad as reported. I'm not sure I'll ever hunt with it but I may, it's not like it fills a niche that I already don't have six other rifles that do the same thing. But it sure is pretty, it's a Euromark with normal checkering, darker oil finish and no white line spacers...........maybe I'll shoot a WT on my lawn with it this fall..........

Good day folks i’m Gonna stick this out there! Is the 378 wby worth spending more money on then the Ruger? It appears you’re only getting around 100fps faster outta the same bullets. Or am I wrong I’ve never owned a 378.

Wouldn’t be cought with a wby anything...

With or without your furry slippers on?
Truth B told, I really don’t care what anyone shoots.
It’s just when one is said to be better than the other ....
Anyways, once again c-bmi your sound reasoning that comes with experience speaks volumes compared to those who claim to be King.
We all know there was only one King and he passed on August 16th 1977.
Long Live the King...I’m All Shook Up!
