I'm in the market for a big bore and I was curious to see if anyone has any experience with this caliber. Like what is it like to handload and shoot. I'm rather torn between it because I can easily get a LH rifle or the tried and true 375 H&H.
 
Do a search for 375 Ruger in the thread TITLE for the last 2 years. Make sure you specify the 2 year period. Or "threads started by gatehouse" in the Hunintg Rifles forum.

The 375 Ruger is the best .375 out there. Only one that may be as good is the .375 Weatherby/.375 Improved versions.

The .375/338 Chatfield-Taylor is not and never will be, as good a cartridge as the .375 Ruger. anyone that owns one sucks. :)

I just bought an Alaskan .375 Ruger last week! Now for the scope I will maybe stick with a Leupold VX-III 2.5X8X36mm. I did ordered dies and brass so the next step will be to develop some 225 grains for deer & caribou and 300 grains loads for moose.

What makes the 375 ruger better than any of the other 375's? I don't have any experience with the caliber but have been doing some reading and toying with the idea of getting a rifle in this caliber. I've narrowed it down to something in either a H&H or ruger but i would like to know the differences plus and pros or cons

I would never own a 375 Ruger and it can't do anything that the H&H has been doing for over 100 years.

It is still almost impossible to find factory ammo anywhere and if you are a reloader brass is almost non-existant and dies are also hard to find.

Go with an 375 H&H factory ammo and reloading components are available everywhere.
 
Another vote for the 375 H&H, I don't need to "PR" it to death to make it the best. It has been doing that on its own for quite some time. And probably will continue to for quite some time to come.:cool:
 
I own the 375 Alaskan, great gun, accurate and fun to shoot. The only upgrade I may do is replace the Hogue stock with a McMillan stock. I carry this gun for deer, bear, moose although I don't need the horse power here in Ontario it's fun to carry something a little different. I also had a Rem XCR in 375 H&H liked this gun as well, just not as well built as the Ruger in my opinion, that's why I traded it for the Ruger. Hopefully in the next couple years I would like to do a Yukon Moose hunt and will have the perfect rifle for the job. I know your looking for a LH rifle, but Epp's has a used RH Alaskan for $879 just FYI. Good luck on your search of the perfect 375. Lots of folks on here have some good information.

My Model 70 in 300 Winchester is the same length action as a 375, just with a shorter mag box/follower and different ejector. I'd hazard a guess that you'd never notice the difference whether that rifle was a 375 H&H or Ruger, until you had to find ammo in New Hazleton, Yellowknife or Dar Es Salaam.

Ballistically, maybe not. It does fit in a shorter action than the H&H, FWIW. And does come packaged in rifles that appeal to some of us.

Most of the components are inter-changeable, excluding brass of course. If a guy can't find components for the Ruger now a days he'd better not bother wasting time in the woods and mountains looking for animals to kill and eat either...... Judging from my experience with getting 375Ruger components.:)
 
I stop at almost every store in the Fraser Valley and none of them had 375 Ruger ammo, brass or dies and I just spent 3 weeks traveling from the lower mainland to Prince Rupert not one store had factory 375 Ruger ammo, brass or dies in stock two had rifles.

Actually can't remember if Omineca did or not.

Not saying much for availability maybe in 5 - 10 years it will be commonly available but it isn't now.

Yeah yeah of course I was only refering to brass and dies... :p
 
You should move to a more modern province.:p

I had RCBS dies (coulda had Reddings too), two boxes of brass and a box of factory stuff from the first store I walked into. And I'm not what you'd call 'lucky' normally......

When I was in Slovakia (Eastern Europe) last I had a university student come up to me and ask "what is it like to come to such an advanced society as ours" I tried to be very careful how I answered him but I finally had to say " I'm very sorry to have to tell you this but it is like going back 20 years in time for me when I entered your country"...

I'll never move to Slovakia and I'll never move to Alberta... :D

That's OK. It's enough for me knowing we've got 375 Ruger stuff and you don't.:D

FWIW I like all the provinces, excluding a few small, yet highly populated regions of some.;):)
