375 Ruger

The African hunters sure seem to like their Sound Moderators on their NEW KING (and other) rifles. While I wouldn't want one for much of BC hunting as it adds length and bulk to the rifle, I can see how on open plains area they would make hunting much more pleasant. Hopefully Canada smartens up and allows them

In 1963, the 300WM made one of my favorite cartridges-the 300 H&H- obsolete. There is no question of that, as you can get a 300WM chambered in virtually any brand of rifle today.

It's perfectly understandable, of course. .30 Cal cartridges have always been popular and a .30 cal magnum with H&H ++ velocity, that was available to anyone (not just those wanting to pay high dollar) was going to be a huge winner. And it was.Winchester gave the average joe hunter 300 magnum performance without having to go H&H or WBY. Other gun makers jumped in and we all know the rest.

Over 40 years later, Ruger did the same thing with the .375's. .375's were far less popular than the .30 cals, so it made sense that it took time and that every other .375 other than the H&H was basically a dud. And every other 375 had some proprietary aspect of it that made it unreasonable for the average joe.

Most factory 375 H&H rifles were large, long and bulky, good for Africa but not the rainforest jungles of BC or the high alpine.

Now we have a .375 cartridge that is chambered in many rifles, and we don't have to only endure the "typical" .375 rifle that is more oriented to a flat land safari.

LOTS of North American hunters want .375 power with a 30-06 or better trajectory but want it in a compact package similar to thier 30-06.Now they can buy it off the shelf, rather than custom jobs.We are now seeing what happened with the 300WM and the 300 H&H.

The 375 Ruger is quickly taking over!

Taking over what? The rainforest jungles of British Columbia? Laughing!

And wasn't the 300 WSM going to make all 300 Magnums obsolete?

Taking over the majority of new rifle sales in .375 Caliber, of course!

The 300 WSM was just supposed to give 300 WM performance in a short action. Nobody expected it to dominate 300 Magnum sales, although it's probably in 2nd place after the 300WM for new rifle 300 sales. It's certainly proved to be a very popular "new" cartridge.

The .300WSM , unfortunately doesn't feed well, so , once the "unwashed masses" bought one , and tried it out, the enthusiasm waned a bit. I just like the fact that my .375 Ruger feeds well, is in a short handy rifle, is AS POWERFUL (or more) than a .375 H & H. But really, who gives a $hit if one gun is more powerful than another by 10%. A .375 ANYTHING is about 50% more gun than almost ANY animal needs here in N.A.
Can't we just all get along?...........
Instead of a Ruger vs H&H thing, lets just amalgamate into a .375 caliber KING KLUB. (I think even the .366"ers could join........although they start at the "junior" level for a probationary period of a year !!!) I mean we all shoot the SAME BULLETS, just a slightly different piece of brass holding it on.

I don't know beans about 375-anything, but I have to think the 300 WM brass to 375 Ruger brass magic trick must be a heck of a point in the Ruger's favor.

It's not a bad thing that you can form brass from 300WM, but it's not necessary as 375 Ruger brass is available with a phone call! :)

Great post Sgt. Rock, I have both the H&H and the Ruger and I simply don't understand the contempt for the Holland and Holland by certain people.
I have never seen any other cartridges treated like that so I fail to see what is to be gained by posting such hate about any cartridge.
It certainly doesn't leave me being impressed with the poster !
As well as having both 375s and really liking them I also have a neat little 375 / 06 Imp. and I love it.
So, having said that I agree with having a group 375 thread as you suggested and Sgt. Rock Thanks again for your sensible post and a Happy New Year to all !
