375's on the '06 case

Well after deciding that I "needed" a Pre'64 Model 70 of some type I ended up with two of them in 30-06....the 1959 Featherweight will remain "as is" , but the other, a 1950 standard rifle has me thinking I need something with a 375 bore on this action..as I do have a chrome-moly .375 Douglas blank in the corner as well.....not wanting to mess with feed rail and bolt face mods I really should do something on the 30-06 or 9.3x62 case....or maybe the 9.3x66 Sako case??..or..would it really be a big deal to get the 375 Ruger to feed..?

ideas and experiences please...reamers would be nice too..:D

Yeah, the .375 Hawk/ Scovill is supposed to be the cat's meow in a .30-06 case.

Personally, I'd leave both your rifles alone and set one up for 180 gr. bullets and a scope, and the other one with open sights calibrated for 220 gr. bullets.

That way you can handle pretty much anything with you scoped rife, and hunt with the open sights when it is close range and you're hunting big animals. It would be kind of like a safari rifle.

Well, you know what I am going to say:p

I looked at the 375 Hawk at one point...Just didn't have the velocity I wanted to make it a truly versatile cartridge, like the 375 Ruger.:p

if I didn't want to use my exisitng 375 barrel that would be a good choice...maybe I should do a 375 Taylor...a 338 Win feeds fine until the .473"
bolt face interferes........a simple bolt face & extractor mod and it might feed as is.....

What's the OAL of your loads SC?
 
Two choices, the way I see it if you want to use your blank go all the way and turn it into a 375 H&H, change or modify the ejector and bolt stop and a little massaging of the feed ramp and your good to go or if you decide to leave the action factory go with the 35 Whelen.

well,...I have so much stuff here I can't remember what I have...I pulled out my 375 blank to check it out was immediately reminded that it is threaded for an Enfield and chambered in the H&H......the thread is not a problem as there is lots of shank and overall length to rethread and rechamber it but I'll have to figure out how much H&H chamber I have to remove to get down to an '06 case diameter...it's going to be a lot....I might just order up a 338 or 35 cal blank and do a 338-06 or a Whelen.....

Hey Rembo. I am in the same boat as you. I have a p-17 and I want to have it rebarreled to a big boomer. My pics are .404 Jeffery or .375 Ruger or 9.3x62. I really like the .404 but it would entail a lot of work to get it to feed right by a gunnysmith.
I want to keep this as simple as possible. Your mention of the .375-06 has caught my interest and I wonder how much effort is it to make cases for it?

THe 375 Hawk/Scovill will exceed 2500 with 270gr. Hornadys as well, and 2600 with 260 gr. Noslers ... the '06, & Whelen cases are a whole lot easier to come by than either of the 9.3's.

Perhaps "superior" was not the right word ... "about equal to" may have been better. The selection of 375 bullets vs 366 bullets would also constitute a big plus for me.
 
the 9.3x66 case will have almost no advantage in a 3.400 magazine because the 4mm extra length is taken up by bullet.

Every pre-64 I've seen (three) that was converted from '06 to belted mag fed notchy. They did feed, but not as well as an original short mag action, though to be fair, none of them had the correct magazine box and follower swapped in.

Since you have a good 30-06 FW, a nice (and classic) match would be a standard weight re-bored to a Whelen. The std barrels are too big for a 30 cal but are perfect in 358 caliber.
 
I would look at a 9.3 x 64 necked up to the 375. The capacity is much better than the 62 by length and by width and it still allows for a nice bullet placement out in the mag. The brass is not that difficult to find and in it's normal form, a 284 gr. 9.3 bullet gets (if memory serves - about 2650 ft/s)

It is one of my favorites. I think a .375 bullet in a 9.3 x 64 case would be a good choice.
