I always wanted a Colt, but I think the Smiths are better guns?

Depends on the models you're comparing. Certainly easier to work on. - dan

Ive seen a couple Smolts/Smythons. They used the frame (trigger) of the S&W, and someone screwed on the Python barrel. It combined the LCF of the vented barrel, with the better shootability of the SW action.

I think the best of both in a great package.

Quite possibly. The python barrels had a tapered bore, and were well known for their accuracy. They also mounted them on ruger frames as well. - dan

Im not a big fan of ruger coil spring actions. The colt V main spring had a "stacking" feel to me making the hardest part of the pull being just prior to let off. So yup, I prefer the SW trigger. Add on the Starsky barrel and Idbe happy.

I’m just learning about handguns but some are saying the new blued Colt Pythons are nice . Do the Colts have some MIM parts as well ? But we can’t buy them anyway . Sad !
I think I need to also get on some S&W forums as I have questions or is 5hete enough Knowles let fellas on GunNutz ?

There are some very knowledgeable people on here. The new Colts are pretty nice, but not as well finished as the old ones. That's true of most guns, however. MIM parts are used on most modern handguns, more economical manufacturing. I think once we get the spoiled children out of Ottawa and some adults in parliament we will reverse the freeze and the OIC. - dan

I have had early model Pythons as well as the 357 model which is the for runner of the Pythons and never really had a stacking problem on them
But I have noticed it in a couple later models. I mainly shoot DA, If you shoot SA , it really don't matter.
I have not shot the new model, I think Colt did a way with the flat spring.

I was always on the lookout for a 3 in Colt Python, but never found one and likely would not have payed the price if I had.

Nice revolvers, I like seeing them with wear from use! The first Colt pistol I ever seen was a Python with a plugged barrel a buddy of mine had when we were kids, years later I remember saying what a damn shame.

I agree. I had a blued Python in the late 80's. I bought it on the strength of its reputation. There was no discernible difference, to me at least, in the smoothness of its double action trigger pull compared to my 686-3s with Wolff Mainsprings and trigger return springs. I preferred the double action of the 686 because I could finesse the trigger into a "single-action" stage for final adjustment of sight picture. Such a pleasure to shoot the Double Action of those 686's compared to the Python that let off unpredictably (to me). Anyways, I sold the Python quickly and that quirky cylinder release turned me off too.

It was all that and a bag of chips in the ‘70s. How about Axel Foley with his High Power??

Yeah the double stack 9mm auto was "state of the art" in late 70's and early 80's.

Had both and would take the HP in a heartbeat over the S&W!
