.38/.357 Loads with Rifle Powders?

I have heard of this twice now, but cna't find data for it any where.

My brother in law used to load .357 Mag with IMR 3031, and a friend just yesterday told me that he uses IMR's 40351 and 4831 in .38 Special loads.

Is this safe? I suppose they wont be over pressuer, but won't most of the powder just fall out the end of the barrel unburned?

I have not personally seen these loads in action...

You won't have good results as those powders are too slow burning and you will get incomplete/inconsistant ignition, much unburnt powder in the barrel, large variation in velocity, poor accuracy, who comes up with this stuff?
 
HOWDY . Look in the reloading books for alliant 2400 powder ,this will get as much as you want in a 357 carbine. As to them other powders.!! If the powder companys do not list it there is a reason.

I use Blue Dot for my .357 rifle loads.From the NRA hanloading handbook.This powder gives the fastest velocity for a 158 gr load.

You will benefit with a slower powder if you're shooting out of a longer barrel (like a lever carbine or full length rifle).

Even then, I would go too much slower than H4227 or so
