38-55 & bullet barn

I bought a Marlin 38-55 a couple years ago and didn't do much with it till lately, I bought brass from rusty wood, I just measured it and it is 2.080" I don't know much about the Marlin it was an impulse buy! On the barrel is "Black powder", so I guess it is older, looks to have been worked on, reblued I think and someone put a Williams's peep sight! Does anyone know if I can use BP replacements with this barrel?

You can use Pyrodex as a direct sub for proper BP. You can also use 777 but with a reduction in charge volume of 15% by their rules. In that case you'd need that last 15% as a filler over top of the propellant powder. Cream of Wheat or oat bran are suitable filler materials for this sort of thing.

Or look up who the local black powder shooters are using as a supplier. I'll bet you can find a source for the proper stuff with a bit of digging.

Thanks again, I will have goex for my Pietta, but thought the substitutes for the lever action would keep it cleaner! I could try both! Gonna be fun , soon will order a bunch of projectiles from Jethunter.

I can tell you from exp. Andy and Lois from the Bullet Barn are top shelf in their quality and work ethic. You won't be disapointed
