Got this gently used rifle, no not for sale but am looking to see if anyone knows of a source for 300gr. bullet molds and load data with black powder. Thanks, John.

I'll have a look through my stash of molds. I think I "might" have a mold for 38-55. Dunno on the weight. I'll have to cast a couple up and see...

If I don't get back to you by the end of next week, pm me and jog my memory

Age of the gun? Old? New?

If you want the best out of it, you WILL need to slug the barrel. Several different sizes were 'standard' and while they all will sort of work, the best results will be to match up the bullet size with the bore diameter, as well as watching the rate of twist, as a slower than normal twist rate will not stabilize a heavy bullet.

I order my custom sized molds from Accurate Molds in the US. With the specified alloy they always cast within .0005" of the diameter I ask for.
You'll need to slug the bore and then get a bullet .001" to .002" larger than the groove diameter.

So sorry, man. Just went through my collection of molds and dug out the one I thought was 38 caliber. It's not. Its for a 35 caliber. Runs about .360 dia.

Didn't even get around to checking the weight, as I just threw it back into the pot.

I apologise if I got your hopes up.

Cast of pure lead thee should be close to 300 gr. And probably right around .378". If shooting black, pure lead should "bump up" (obturate) anyway. Or you can order the same mold with gas check shanks and use a harder lead alloy that casts fatter and doesn't need to bump up. Black powder load data shouldn't be too difficult. It was originally a black powder round. 55 grains of black powder with a 38 caliber bullet... Hence the designation 38-55.

Hey Joe
I have a 290 gner for my hiwall ,mine is 1/18 twist and it doesnt like it too much. I could send you some to try or a box of 100 or so. They are sized .379 Send me a PM let me know if you want a box to try , cheaper then buying moulds that way. Cooner

It slugs at 378 and it is possibly 20 years or more old

20 years old is as good as brand new.

Do you have any idea which chamber it has?

You may wish to invest in a chamber cast to figure that out, otherwise, look around the web and see what other folks with the same gun are saying.

Cheers
