38-55 loads

The Winchester fodder here is pretty benign, 250 gr was the only option.
And please remember, I'll looking at a raggedy, worn out bore. Jacketed bullets don't expand to fit the bore, so this rifle is seeing lots of blow-by...has to be. The rifling looks like faint shadows, the bore is like the stem on a wine glass...small in the middle / big at the chamber and muzzle; but for 300 $, what do you expect?
The bullets passed right through this buck, it wasn't that bad of shooting....mostly bad luck, a neck shot that passes between jugular and the spinal column, wtf?
It just didn't want to hit anything major, bones or organs, not that day
But there was 'zero' waste-age. Ate everything but the bullet holes.
But a sewer-pipe bore like this one has...loves oversize, cast, pure lead.
IMO
Stay safe

I always cycle my hunting loads through the carbine to check for fitment. The odd one requires a touch of lube (I use dubbin = Lanolin) on the round and a careful cycling, sometimes repeatedly til it's smooth in & out.
You don't need a huge oversize bullet as the lead will bump up to fit the bore. I use a Lee .379 on my casts. And I like BP, not a lot of room for error; just fill it, heck a drop tube and a slightly compressed load is best. A lot less thinking/worrying about what is safe for the rifle.

tokguy.....
You've been very helpful, thank you...
My bore slugs @ .380 and I have a Lee mold that drops as cast @ .3815 with straight WW lead, and my limited thinking was this would be perfect for this bore.....I don't size my plain base cast stuff and have been pretty lucky that way, but not this time
anyway, I'll try pure Pb.....but it's still gotta fit the case and chamber
I'm on the fence about BP.....but I think it would be pretty cool
I apologize to the OP, Hammer64 for running away with the thread.....I'm trying really hard to shoot this 118 year old Winchester safely

Wheel weights are a lot harder than one might think. I've ran them through Cap 'n ball revolvers (which always use oversize ball for safety...at least at my house) and considerably more force is req'd to 'trim the ring' when seating the ball.
My hollow based 41 LC won't shoot sh*t with WW's.
The stick on weights are the exception; lots of them are quite soft.
