When I got up this morning I still was debating on which stand to. As I got in the truck and checked the wind conditions I thought I would head over to the farm that I shot at a coyote about 3 weeks ago. It seemed the wind was very light coming from the NW. I got there just before legal light and setup my decoy/caller about 40 yds out and to my left. I tuned on my ecaller/decoy (my decoy lately has been nothing more than a few feathers attached with some elastic bands to my spitfire) and started playing an injured bird (baby turkey distress) sound on really low (#1) volume. I made my way back to the fence line and setup. I waited a couple minutes before loading up and then hit my hand caller dying rabbit call. I screamed it as loud as I could for a good minute before going silent for a couple minutes. I put another hand caller in and started screaming as loud as I could for another minute and went silent for a couple more minutes. I then screamed for the third time for about a minute before going silent again. I then notice a dark object milling around the crest of the field hill. I thought it was a raccoon and watched it move around for a few seconds before I decide to glass it to confirm. To my surprise this 100 yd raccoon turned out to be the back of a coyote 200 yds. I instantly got on my squeeker and gave a few squeeks and sure enough here he comes. He came a good 50 yds before he stops to listen to a coyote barking in the background. (I am thinking it was his buddy asking him where is he going) I put the crosshairs on him thinking he may go back to where he came but no he starts coming toward the decoy as now he must be able to hear the ecaller baby turkey distress sound. He walks another 30 yds or so and the coyote in the background barks again, he stops and just turns his head back giving me a front chest shot. I am about to shoot but he continues to move forward. As he gets to about 80 yds or so the other coyote barks again, this time he turns broadside to look back and that’s when I take the shot. He spins a few times and starts yipping, At this point I am hoping the other coyote comes running in but no luck. I stayed on stand for a good 5 minutes later and tried to entice the other one out but he would not show. He must of new something was up because he did an almost complete circle in the bush constantly barking…. It was a great morning with great conditions to be calling. Did a second set on another farm with no takers…..Enjoy the pics….
