38 or 357?

I'm gearing up to use a 4.2 GP100 for SSR as well. Building a load around 160g RN lead bullets in 38SPL cases. Easily makes 125PF. If I was concerned about mixing them up, which I'm not since the GP is my only 38, I'd use 38+P brass. Personally, I find the 38 cases load much more easily from speedloaders than the 357 cases. Since this will be a dedicated SSR revolver, I don't much care about the crud ring.

I don't shoot IPDA but I load both calibers in .357 cases. I use lead bullets for 38spl and jacketed for .357 so there is no doubt when I want to know if it's one caliber or the other. Bonus, you don't have to reset the dies since you have the same case (I'm lazy on that). I never saw any difference in ballistic using a .357 case for 38spl

Are you running it on Saturday?

For a multigun match ???? Nope, gonna stick with the tried and true Glock. Besides, the only way I'd get the speedloader holders attached to my molle belt would be with duct tape :D Might be kinda cool...the tactical redneck look !!

so, shot a few cylinders of factory ammo through the 4.2" GP100, both 38 and 357. hell of a kick from the 357, and even the 38 is stronger than other 38 i've shot. but yeah, i'm thinking it's gonna be both, though the majority in 38 for practice and regular range days... already looking at a progressive reloading setup, too, and yeah that'll be a 38 so that the odd time i DO wanna load 357, i suppose i'll just just tweak the dies (until i get tired of that and then cough up the coin for separate dies)

too bad everyone at my range picks up and keeps the 38 brass. only the 9 and 22 gets tossed in the trash / scrap bucket.

I've just switched to SSR using a 4.2 GP 100.

I'm running 357's using my preferred powders starting load. On paper it lists 158gr bullet running 1100fps =PF of 173800. I thought why worry about if a 38 load meets PF. And all that extra cleaning of that ring of crud.

I've found the 357 load is easily manageable in the Ruger.

any idea what factory Remington JSP 158gr stuff would clock at? same speed you think?

I was thinking about doing it until one of the other SO's said something about floor mopping :D

Remington lists the non +P 158 at 755 fps at the muzzle so a PF of 119290. So that doesn't make the minimum.

there new HD ultimate home defense only comes in a 125gr +P listed at 975 at the muzzle, which also falls short at 121875 PF (the same spec's they list for the golden saber). Neither Winchester or Federal list a 38 that will make PF.

That's why I load light 357, you're sure to make PF.

One 38 manufacture that lists their 38's making PF is Sellier and Bellot.
