Looking for .38 Smith and Wesson (not to be confused with .38 Special). This is the type of ammunition used in the Enfield revolver.

I'm told this ammo is harder to find than most calibers, so does anybody know where I can purchase it?

Very hard to come by commercially. I lucked upon a few boxes at LeBaron's in Ottawa while I was out on tour but haven't seen it elsewhere. You would think with the plethora of Enfields, H&Rs, Iver Johnsons, Smith & Wessons, etc. that are chambered for this cartridge there'd be more selection but sadly this is not the case. I have three Smiths in this chambering so I too am looking for a source.

I've resigned myself to buying new Starline brass and eventually casting my own .361" bullets, but haven't started down that path just yet. Anyone up for a group order of molds?

I've had my best luck at the local gun shows. A box here, a half-box there, a bit of brass. I grab it when I see it.

Remington, Fiocchi and some others still make it though it's a bit spendy. It's hit or miss at the shops.

Good luck.

Thanks for the points! Kind of what I was expecting to hear, but thought maybe somebody knew of a source.

It is odd that this caliber isn't imported more often into Canada. It ought to be. As AK pointed out, there's so many guns out there that still fire the cartridge.

R&R (Kingston area) sells a 160 gr SWC bullet in the right diameter. My S&W shot much better when I switched to them from 357 HB bullets.
Can you please elaborate on this R&R? A source of proper sized bullets would be a most welcome alternative to casting my own by the thousands. Thanks.

Remington still makes it. You should be able to order it from any full service gun shop, like Del Selin's in Vernon, BC. In fact, when I was in there last friday, they had some on the shelf. The ammo in the enfield revolver should rightfully be the 38-200.

The 38-200 really turns the little round into a manstopper. When the Geneva convention, banned lead bullets, the Brits had to go to a jacketed bullet. They were kind of limited for space so they made the bullets lighter, because of the copper/nickle jackets.

If you can find hollow base bullets and load your own, these pistols can be very accurate. It isn't advisable to shoot HBWC in them though.

The Geneva Convention has nothing to do with ordnance. The Hague Accord on the other hand does, and only banned bullets which "expand or flatten easily in the human body." The British changed the round out of a concern that the bullet MAY flatten being pure lead, but I doubt you could get a round nose bullet to flatten in the way the Hague Accord intended. The provision was primarily directed against jacketed soft points (soldiers cutting bullet tips off in the field) and hollow points if I recall correctly.

I'm digging what you're saying about the .38/200 though. Not that I really have a need for manstopping but I could go for some loads in that bullet weight! I still say we should make a group order of moulds.

Just got some starline brass at a gun show this month.

As for a group buy on molds you just missed one over at CastBoolits for the orginal 200gr lead bullet. Got mine and be happy to sell you some bullets when it gets here. They finished the run this morning.

Lee makes a Carbide die set. Uses a 380 auto sizer but uses specific expander and seating die.

I also got some new manufactured commercial ammo 145gr bullet at Wholesale sports in Calgary but it wasn't cheap. An awesome CGNer gave me a box of older commercial ammo ammo as well.

I'd be happy to buy some from you, but I don't know if you'd want to cast the kinds of quantities I was thinking! ;) When you get the mould let me know.

We just got some in. It's not on the website so just drop us an email via the contact us form on our website.

If we choose to go for a 10K drum of nickel plated Starline brass we could get it for $153/K plus shipping. I'd be down for at least 2K or so.

IMHO the 38 S&W round was/ is a rabbit stopper rather than a man stopper, no matter what the weight of the bullet. I find factory rounds on sale at gun shows but they are not cheap.

Winchester makes .38 s&w 158gr RNs... I went in on a group buy for a 200 gr RN 6cav mold and love it. Drops .361 constantly.

I love my NOE 6 cavity that throws 200gr 361 RN. Its on the noe website. I do hate however measuring the miniscule powder charges. With only .3 gr between min and max, and this is where you can feel .1 gr difference!!!!
