I ordered a S&W.357 Mag revolver and am looking for .38 Special ammo. Which brand do you recommend? Inexpensive and no missfire

Before I got into reloading my own I shot a variety of brands. Among them were American Eagle, Winclean, Fiocchi, Remington and Blazer. They were all fine. No issues with any of them. Bullets were a variety of plated in round nose, truncated cone, flat soft nose and even some jacketed hollow points. Along the way I got a half dozen boxes of LRN AE ammo as well. Of the lot if the guns had any preference it was for the cast LRN AE stuff. One of my S&W's shot that stuff with VERY neat and tiny groups. The other guns didn't care one way or the other.

Cheap? Not likely. The best you'll find is going to be about the same as buying .40S&W. And be SURE you save the brass. Last I remember paying was $16 a box in a lot of 500 about 4 years back. Now I reload for around $8.50 per 50. And someone said a little while back that they were having trouble finding factory for less than $19 a box. Not sure how hard they had tried. But clearly you'd be doing GREAT to find it at $16.

Thanks for the info. I am newer gunner so prefer to buy ammo, though eventually I probably will go to reloading area.
$19 a box of How many?
In my club/range, they sell 50 round .38 special to me at $35...

:eek::eek:!! If that isn't enough incentive to get into reloading ASAP I don't know what is. Also, depending where you are located, you may have few options on what ammo is available to you and you may have to order it in, which will increase the cost.

Customreloadingservice.com out here on the West Coast (Maple Ridge) offers .38 special at $140.00/500 or $14.00/50, loaded with either 125 gr.or 158 gr. TMJ (Total Metal Jacket) bullets. Whatever you end up buying, as someone else suggested, save your brass.

$35 for 50?! jesus.. 38 special can be one of your most economical rounds.. I've run american eagle, pmc, winchester and even some factory reloads through my gp100.. for plinking and fun at the range I found the factory reloads do the trick as well as fresh factory ammo and theyre only about $14 per 50 from budgrtshootersupply.. I keep all my brass and will reload some day but right now I dont have the time/space to turn out some good loads..

Also forgot to mention to keep an eye on the EE exchange of factory ammo I picked up some reasonably priced boxes of 357 magnum swc and 38 special +P jhp recently at a deal I couldnt pass up

Thanks, I saw http://customreloadingservice.com/reloaded.html now. Amazing prices (.38 SP $140.00 per 500, .357 Mag $165.00 per 500)!
My first firearm will be a S&W 686 (CFO transfer in progress), after I got it I will definitely look into custom reloading option - I don't plan to change my garage into a power factory:)

From what I've been reading here on CGN, by the time the transfer goes through, you could not only change your garage into a power factory, you could build an additional bay just for reloading.
In the meantime, I'm sure John (Curese) can get you stocked up.

Remington UMC stuff t Sail tends to have the best prices I can find and shoots as well as most other stuff for the money. You can also hit up SFRC and buy some Wolf reloads when they are back in stock, I bought a whole whack of these and they've been fine as far as function goes.

I'm using reloads from custom reloading in my 686 for ipsc and they have run very well and accurate. Id like to try some of the 357 and will keep ordering from them until I get my press going!
