Hi,

I am looking to reload some 38 special with 125gr bullets and Trail Boss.
I want to bring my daughters to the range and, after introducing them to the .22, i want them to shoot some mild recoil 38.

What load are you guys using?

Thanks!

Trail Boss isn't the only powder you can use. A 3gn load of Tightgroup or 2.6gns of Bullseye give you mouse fart like low pressure loads just as well.

But if you already have the TB then I can see why you'd want to use that powder. Hodgdon lists the starting load for TB at 3gns for a 750fps velocity. That will be about as mild as you want to go that ensures the bullets leave the barrel without doing a lot of testing.

You do know that Hodgdon has a reloading data center which is like an online reloading manual, right? http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/

Yes, i know, but i wanted to learn what is people's experience with Trail Boss in 38. I already have this powder on hand as i really like it in 45 colt.

Just bought some Tightgroup as a backup to Bullseye that seems have disappeared...will try 3 gr as my test load in a 148 HBWC what say you.

I load .38s with a 130 grain flat point lead bullet and 3 grains of Trail Boss for an extremely light load. It's not the most accurate load in the world, but it's extremely easy to shoot and the report is satisfying. For introducing new shooters to centrefire this is a very moderate step up from rimfires and I think you'll be pleased with the results.

Tightgroup does require a slight big bigger charge to get the same power as Bullseye. If you were using 2.7 of BE I'd likely aim for 2.8 to 2.9 of TG. If you were using 2.8 to 2.9 of BE before then 3 of TG should be a nice first try that is likely very close. Or you may need to bump up to 3.1 of TG. But if you've been shooting the HBWC ammo for a while you know how it makes a difference between .1gn and the need to test and perfect.

I only ever loaded and shot a batch of 500 HBWC's. They were superb though and I really should get a couple of boxes more of them someday.
