38 special with 148 lead was cutter Titegroup

I know , looking for baseline info on getting a lighter load for this combo.

Should be able to go lighter with a starting load of Red Dot, Trail Boss, or IMR Red.

Go to hogdons website, they list loads. They should have something for a cast 158gr for sure. Would work as a starting load for 148.

For 147gr lead in 9mm case a good light load is 2.8gr titegroup. Won't make power factor but will cycle a semi with a light slide spring or be good in a revolver for plinking. But the 38 case has more volume. So check with Hodgdons website.

Yes, pre-lubed lead require a bit less powder than plated campros.

- Shouldn't the first reflex be to either look-up a reloading book or Hodgdon website?

Most (not to say all) reloading incidents I've seen over the years usually involve a "light" load... that somehow ended being a double-load.

I’ve been shooting a Hornady 148gr HBWC with 3.1gr of titegroup for about 830fps in my 4.2” Ruger
It’s a tad fast. I’d be comfortable dropping it down to 3.0 or 2.9.

My favourite handgun load. Still have a PPC gun although I have no intention to shoot PPC, just because I enjoy shooting it so much.

Bullseye, Red Dot and Titegroup behave similarly in the 38 Special and I've used 2.7-3.0 grs of each with a 148 gr FWC in all three with very similar MV's.

If they are hollow base wadcutters you should keep the velocity in that 750fps range. Too much velocity/pressure will cause the skirt to separate and possibly lodge in barrel.

I don’t think you can go too far off the trail with 3.0 grains of TiteGroup. As a long time wad cutter reloader & caster. I rarely seat any wad cutters flush in a 38 cases. There’s just no real advantage unless you are a S&W 52 shooter…..

Yup for 148 WC bullets.
Don't try 3.0 TG with 158 grain Campro bullets though. That load manages to exit a 4" barrel but not so much luck in a 6"
