Anyone know much on the 38 super round? Availability? How do the old Colt 1911A1's handle this round? Are there any old Colts around in 38 super for sale?:sniper:

I like it? It's a 9mm on steroids. More fun to shoot. You can get ammo, but not much variety and it's as expensive as .45acp around here.
Older Colt .38Super 1911's are getting hard to find but they make new ones. I heard there were some issues with the chanbers in the old guns.
Do a search. There was a thread recently on an old one being restored as we speak.

My brother bought this one a few years ago. $800 at the time. It was made in 1962 and it is so tight!
He has the original plastic grips off for safe keeping.

.38 Super is a great round, but the original Colts had head space issues and most of them wouldn't group worth a crap. But with a decent barrel and load combination they are capable of fantastic accuracy. The rimless versions of the case feed better generally, but in a single stack the original case will work fine.

a great round in a properly prepared colt.
it not a rimless cartridge so headspaces on a slight boss on a colt barrel.
best to get a ramped barrel to entirely enclose the brass.i have a briley barrel and comp on mine and it shoots a 125 gr bullet at 1400 '/sec

The factory loads are a little soft...If you just want to shoot bullseye this just fine, but if you want to compete you will have to handload.

Several years ago .38 super was very common in IPSC; lots of those guns still around. Put a "wanted" ad in the EE and see what responses you get.

FWIW some of those guns have 100, 000 rounds through them.

My 38super is a 1950/51 and the ramped version wasnt available. I sure in the hell wasnt going to have Gunnar mill out the frame to accommodate the ramped barrel so i went with a non-ramped Fusion Firearm barrel for mine. Hope to have it back in my hands within the next couple weeks.

Thanks for the info. Say I asked for permission to join the EE section. Now what, just sit and wait for a Reply? Forgive my ignorance as I'm a newbe!
