.38 vs .38 special?

"...the instructor was trying to tell us..." Been saying for years a lot of the instructors aren't qualified.
You can get loaded HP's, but there isn't a great demand for 'em. Too expensive to shoot regularly anyway.
"...have no problem of looking for a used one..." S&W made .38 S&W revolvers exist, but aren't easy to find in decent condition. Your other option, also if you can find one in decent condition, would be a milsurp No. 2 Mk. 1 Enfield revolver.
Loaded ammo can be had. Remington 146 grain LRN runs $40.95 per 50 from Shooter's Choice in Waterloo. Epp's and other more local shops should have it too. You might get a better deal if you buy 5 or more boxes. Still won't be cheap though. Mind you, shooting any factory ammo all the time gets expensive quickly.
Less expensive shooting with a .38 Special only revolver(not easy to find these days either, but there's far more of them in good condition than any .38 S&W. A .357 would be easiest to find. Reloading .357 brass to .38 Special velocities(eliminates the lube gunk ring in the cylinders. Nuisance. No danger.) works well. Gives you the option of the magnum too.

Considering number of posts original poster has, the question and follow up; I'd conclude he's confusing .38S&W with .38special due to the fact he was shooting ".38 out of S&W revolver".

Man, there is something to be said for literacy. No, the OP did not confuse .38 S&W with .38 SPL. As he said, he shot .38 S&W out of a Smith and Wesson revolver, and loved it. He probably did not know that there is a plethora of cartridges with "38" in their nomenclature, hence the post.

Probably the cheapest place for 38Spl ammo I've seen is a gunshow selling reloads. Had the stores beat, but no fancy packaging. Hit and miss on availability.

X1 on avoiding gun show reloads. You dont know what youre getting yourself into.Best to take up reloading yourself

I would personally avoid the 38 S&W.Its difficult to find proper bullets, and brass(when you can find it),is expensive.Just stick with the 38 SPL

.38 S&W brass

Sorry to hijack the thread.......
It was mentioned that .38 S&W brass is expensive.
What is the going price for it (used brass, good shape)?
Thanks.

The brass isn't expensive, it's just scarce. It's weird that it's that way. You would think that scarcity would equal higher prices. Got a bag of 150 once fired for $10 at a show.
