Lyman # 44 .. you can find online if you do a bit of searching

only list a 249 g Cast load ( not at the top of the list) and no Pressure given for those loads

I agree with Snider as regards bullet weight I have 2 38-55's, both have a 14" twist and both love the 300 Gr "Money" bullet with 20 Grs of IMR 4198 or 5744.

4227 is quite fast for such a heavy bullet. It can work but will be lower velocity than could get with a slower powder.

I don't shoot quite as heavy a bullet as that, but I have a rifle I had built for "benchrest" schuetzen in .38-55. I shoot a 330gr bullet using 18.0gr of IMR-4227 and it shoots quite well. I got the advice on that powder from some experienced competitors on the ASSRA forum, as well as Randy Wright's book on shuetzen rifles. I'm pretty sure the latest Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has data for my combination.

Chris.

I should also say that you might find that bullet is a touch long for 1:14 twist. I have a highwall with a Ron Smith gain twist barrel ending in 1:14, one of the bullets I've used in it is a Paul Jones elliptical bullet that is about the same weight as yours. It seems accurate, but only marginally stable at 200m in that twist.

Oh, and my load data from above is with a breech seated bullet, not seated in the case, so I have significantly greater powder capacity.

My Lyman Cast Handbook doesn't have any 38-55 loads using 4227. 4th Edition, sixth printing, July 2018. If you have a newer version would you let me know what the load for the 335gr cast bullet is with IMR4227 please.

You are correct about it not being in the latest Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. I thought it'd seen it in there but was likely thinking of the .40-65 & 400gr bullets. Other than people I know from the ASSRA forum, the printed data I have is from Randolph Wright's book "Loading and Shooting Traditional Schuetzen Rifles" where he recommends a start load of 16.0gr and a max load of 18.5gr of IMR-4227 with a 275gr-310gr bullet, so a fair bit lighter than yours. With my slightly heavier bullet I stopped at 18.0gr, but I'm also breech seating so I have a lot more case capacity than a normal .38-55 load.

So I guess my info isn't of much use to you in retrospect.

thanks to all for your input.....just tried 14 gr 4227 with very good results but at 1100 to 1130 fps very constant in the 2in at 100 yds ....just on the lands ,, lots more variables to try thanks for now don

thanks again.......im moving to 4759 ....my 360 gr boomer mould was made to fit my bbl dimention..it was to be for black powder but i have not tried it yet....i used xl33 till it was gone .with 4895 data ...but it was not the same results...i always read the cases for pressure and extraction etc but all seemed ok.....i would try a 330 gr mould and will look for one ....and try 4227 again...its all fun as i do not have to go only to my own range to try loads its 50 ft from from the loading bench.....but so many combinations so little time
