3855 and imr 3031 help

Don't see why it couldn't work as its close to h322 burn rate, but in all my manuals ( 15+) I cant find any data using that powder and the 38-55. Sorry i can't be of any help, Perhaps someone with quick load could work one up for you.

in my lyman 49th edition it takes me up to 335gr no 2 alloy ...3031 starting at 26.5 and up to 29.0 ////the preasure listed on the 29 gr is just under max preasure listed for the rifle by the maker......26.5 lists 16000 cpu and 29 gr at 27800 thats all i have to date

thanks everyone ..jet h my 360 gr bullet is 1.455 long and in my other loads its seated .730 which is 20 off the lands .......i shoot it out to 400 with great results but my go to powder ...xl33 is all but gone thats a surplus powder from ammo mart ....the original higgins powder from the 70s old boys can relate hope the numbers help you help me the 3031 powder gives me stellar results in my 85 4570 so im looking to try it in 3855 if possible don

Quickload results for 38-55, 360gr cast, bullet length 1.455", shank seated .710" deep, 24" barrel

29 gr IMR3031
: 106% fill, 1617 fps, 32925 psi, 97% powder burn

28 gr IMR3031
: 102.4% fill, 1560 fps, 29368 psi, 95.5% powder burn

26 gr IMR3031
: 95% fill, 1444 fps, 23356 psi, 92% powder burn

Keep in mind QL generic prediction could be out 10-15% from the results your rifle show.

j h thanks thats a slick system now if my bbl is 30 in would the 92 % burn rate increase some.....and would dropping to 24 gr be possible....and is the% of powder actually left in the bbl as a residue or is it burned out front after bullet exits.........just a coupleof questions if you have time thanks again don

The percentage of powder burned would go up slightly in 30in bbl but not much. The reason for 0nly 92% burn at 26gr load is the pressure is too low for the powder to burn cleanly. It's rifle powder and it needs a certain pressure level to burn properly. 23K psi might not seal the brass in the chamber and might give inconsistent velocities. IMO 98% burn isn't cause for concern but 92% might be. Maybe you need a faster powder.

24gr IMR3031 (30" bbl): 88% fill, 18564 psi, 1326 fps, 90% powder burn. That's not great numbers, for the same reasons as the 26gr load only more so.

So- mate, any chance you can run a quick load thingy for my 375 win load data ? please.

model 94 XTR factory bigbore, 245gr (its cast but maybe quickload doesnt need to know? or maybe it does) im using AR2207 - 20GRs - win brass 375w brass.

but i also used 28-30gr of AR2207 for same weight 245gr.
an also 28gr for a 220gr Hornady.

im interested to see if it comes up with any 'carefuls' an what it sorta estimates velocity and or pressures to be at, an also to see if it shows a similiar case fill %

fingers crossed :)
thanks
NOTE H4198 is the powder you know it as

well once again thanks for your time and effort you have enlightened me lots im working with the bn of my cast and i may change the mix in a sample casting with another powder you have given me direction through information and i will proceed ..........thank you once more don......4198 and xl33 identical loadings different results.............

Not to derail the thread, but I have found IMR 3031 to be somewhat dirty, even with jacketed bullets,
leaving unburned powder grains in the barrel. This has not been detrimental to accuracy, however.

For cast bullets I prefer RL 7, IMR 4198 or Norma N200. For my jacketed bullets [255 grain Barnes] I
use H322 Exclusively. Dave.

Would not your 360 seat deeper in the case.....taking away space, making your 29gr load impossible? I would think the limitations would be rifle/action, much like level 1 45-70 loads for trapdoor.

Never tried H322 in the 38-55 ........may have to? That's with the 255gr jacketed right?

Yes, with the jacketed bullet. I am using 32.5 grains, but as usual, start a bit lower first.

My 38-55 is a 1979 Reproduction M94. Very accurate, and I shot my biggest Whitetail
buck with it. :) Thumps them good! Dave.

the 360 gr grouped the best when seated just off the lands this is in my single shot lever guns are another subject with my old no longer made powder it did manage just under 5 inches at 400 yds 4 of 5 shot group... i would you like to get back there with a current powder .just more fun to be had and got some help here on gn don
an old shooter told ..shot 1 ..shot 2 just well ok then ..shot 3 ..we could just have fluked one in there shot 4 could truly be on to something good ...shot 5 well lets make it the hard one and toss it out to the side a little cuz the rest of the holes looked sort of crowded i always count on the fluke one in trick////////////////
