I want to know if I can shoot this in my 357. I bought it by accident but thought it might be usable since it would be a low power load for my son. Thanks

The 38 S&W cartridge is larger diameter case. If the 38 S&W fits in the chambers of your 357 you can safely shoot them but be aware that you will probably have a badly leaded barrel.
No the 38 special did not come from the 38 S&W it came from the 38 long colt.
You would be far better off to return them and get the 38 Specials.

Unsafe period. The 38 S&W is about .004 larger diameter. The round shouldn't fit in the gun but if it did the idea of pushing an oversized projectile like that through a smaller barrel is not safe. The 38 S&W round is not the parent of the 38 S&W Special. The 38 Long Colt is.

If it is a lead bullet then it will swage down in the bore no problem. People shoot oversized lead bullets regularly without issues. Including me in an old milsurp that has way larger throats than bore diameter.
Pressure will be higher but .38SW is very low pressure compared to a .357 so it won't be an issue.
I wouldn't bother though.
I'd just look for someone local to trade it to.

.004" is #### all for a lead bullet. I would simply buy the right ammo myself.

You are missing the point here. Ammo sales are usually "final, no returns" so don't even bother trying. And although you might be able to use that ammunition in your .357Magnum without suffering harm, it's better not to take chances. So the proper Gunnutz answer is ... Buy another gun! :dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

I don't understand people saying if it fits in your 357 just shoot it
There is NO WAY it will fit in a 38 spl / 357 mag cylinder .
If it does your 38 spl/357 cyl has some major problems !
The 38 S&W case is larger in diameter .
