And so it begins....

Mar.17, 2013

Defense Distributed, the team behind the 3D printedable gun project, announced on Saturday that they have obtained a federal license to manufacture and sell firearms. Cody Wilson uploaded a picture of the Type 7 federal firearms license (FFL) on Facebook.

Defence Distributed has been making guns with 3D printed parts for months, and with this license, Defence Distributed can not only make guns but also distribute these guns and sell them. All are completely legal.

Wilson had submitted the application to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (a division of the Department of Justice) in October 2012. Normally the process takes only about 60 days. But it took about six months for Wilson to get the approval.

Though this is important step for Defense Distributed, Wilson told Ars Technica that he will not actually start manufacturing and selling guns until he receives an "add-on" to his FFL. This license would allow him manufacture and deal a broader range of firearms under the National Firearms Act, for example a fully-automatic rifle. Wilson said he applied for the license on Saturday and expects to receive approval within a few weeks.

With the license, Wilson will be able to sell some guns he made to cover the cost of the company. In earlier March Wilson announced a plan to launch DEFCAD Search, a new search engine for 3D printable models, hoping his company could benefit from the new search engine business and grow even faster. A search engine is for sure not that easy to make from scratch and to generate money in just a few month, but with the new license, the group can get cash immediately by beginning selling some guns.

That's great news.. Hoping to see more from them in terms of bringing sporting guns to more people. Considering the number of Liberals on the arstechnica site, I was surprised at the number of positive comments.
