I have a 20" AR and put on my Vortex Sparc and Vortex Magnifier which I had on my shorter AR's before. It just doesn't feel as right as I think a scope would. I'm new to 3gun and just wanted to know what are good options for scopes (never owned a scope) and how scopes compare to red dots for 3gunning (in the States it seems the 3gun guys use scopes).
What exact models of scopes should I look at on say a $500 budget?
Thanks again Gunners

I own both a Sparc and a Viper PST 1-4, and I have to say, I love the Viper PST! On one power, the reticle is nice and small. A lot easier to aim precisely at 100 than a large red dot.

It's a little more than your budget, but not too much more.

Any good 1-4x or 1.5-5x IR scope. I like the new vortex 1-4x. I use a falcon 1.5-5x but the vortex is clearer.

If you are actually going to use it for 3 gunning then you should consider the rules of the games and plan accordingly. One of my friends was at a match last week and he was bumped to open as he had an optic on his carbine even though he had no optic on his competition pistol.
He would have scored much better if he had run with irons.

1-4 or better is good..
You do want to be able to dial it down to 1...

Depends too on what matches you shoot...
'Round these parts distances seldom exceed 100 yards..
Go to the US and well... That's another story.
An awesome boner enducing story of 3-gun goidness

depends on what distances you expect to be shooting at.
if its less that 300 yards (which most ranges here in Canada are) I would be looking for something with a 1-? power.

Leave it on 1 power for everything under 100 and crank it up for the long shots.

The one you linked to would be ok if you are shooting open as you can run a secondary offset dot or optic for up close and leave the scope on a higher magnification for the long shots.

Look at Burris scopes. They seem to have some decent 1-4 offerings around the price point you mentioned.
Spend a little more and maybe look at a Meopta. Awesome glass for the money.

I believe bushnell now offers a 1-6.5 that is catered to 3gun use.
Not sure on price but I think its hovering around the $1000 mark.

Don't buy something just for the sake of doing so.
make sure its what you need, otherwise you'll be buying twice and at that point you might as well spent the extra money all at once and bought the right scope.

Basically buy once, cry once.

American Defense whcih you can get at Arms East or Brownells or the Burris PEPR mount which you can get almost anywhere.

My boy ran a Leatherwood 1-4 on my 14.5" AR today. No issues from 10 to 210 meters. I used a Falcon 1.5-5 on my XCR. Both are good choices in the lower cost, low/variable-power scope segment, IMO.

Like many have said, it's about the game and distance etc. I put a Trijicon TR24G 1-4x on my AR, with a Leupold cantilever mount. I love it, and the Trijicon glass is awesome!

It's an expensive, but awesome setup, I like quality that I can trust in the long run.

Consider how invested you'll get into this sport, particularly if you'll shoot in the US.

Also keep in mind that EESA might throw together some stages one day with 300m targets, we have the capability.

If you can see yourself shooting at that distance, most now are opting for a good 1-6x scope. It is quite a bit pricier though.

I might also be tempted to sell my XTR if you're not willing to go over $1k for a 1-6x

I don't see myself shooting 3gun in the States yet, maybe IPSC pistol. Since i'm totally new to scopes this thread has been helpful. I'm thinking Vortex PST so far, anything out there better for a comparable price?

The whole Vortex business model turns me off.
Build something cheaply enough that if (when) in breaks, we'll just send you a new one as replacement.
People rave about this warranty.
I'd rather have a better quality product. Just my opinion.

I totally understand having to work within a certain budget, but I try to spend my money on what I see as being of quality.

Having said that, I can't really give any advice regarding what I would buy in the $500 price range.

I really like Meopta scopes, with the 1-6 Kdot
Or the 1-4 Trijicon. Has really bright glass and very visible chevron.
I think these are both around $1000, may be wrong.

I haven't handled or shot with one, but Burris makes some decent scopes from what I've been hearing and they are closer to the price point you mentioned.

I don't know.
Go play with each of the scopes you are considering and see what you like the best.

I'm a Vortex fan even though I had the exact issue you outlined (optic broke, sent back and got a new one pronto). They're in Guelph, ON so very close to me.

Burris MTAC is a popular 3 gun scope....its $514 at P&D

Millett DMS is $260 at the same place, and a good start if you're not sure what direction to go in. Won't be a hard pill to swallow if you upgrade down the road.

I hear you.
And if it broke on me in practice then I would only be mildly pissed, considering you can get a replacement relatively quickly.
If it broke on me during a competition that I just spent anywhere from $50-$300 in match fees (US competitions can be pricy) plus gas to get there and back, plus hotel costs, plus my time wasted, plus ammo wasted, I would be slightly more than mildly pissed.

Again, this is just my thought process.
I'm not gentle on my equipment.
Food for thought.

In ipsc 3gun you can have an optic on your rifle or shotgun without getting bumped to open, i belive an open pistol is automatically open div. Regardless of rifle or shotgun configuration if you put optics on both long guns your in open. Shotgun speed load tubes put you in open aswell l
