I have a Vortex SPARC mounted on a shorty AR (11.5"). I currently can get rounds on paper at 100 kneeling but really am lucky to make it out there with my eyes much less trying to hit any 'A' zone. What is the current wisdom on flip up magnifiers? I do have a 1.5-4x scope but would rather stick with the SPARC red dot for everything 50 and below on this shorty.

The three triplers I have seen in my searchers are:

The Vortex VMX3
Sightmark
Burris Tripler AR 2Gen

I have a Vortex SPARC and a Vortex VMX3 3x magnifier with the older non swinging mount from another gun. As a magnifier it is great, but I don't have enough room for both and my BUIS. Even with the SPARC pushed right to the front, The VMX will mount in front of the BUIS but almost touching the SPARC. I find for the magnifier not to blur the red dot, I need at least 1 space in between them.

If you have the room for both, it is a fairly good solution. The glass in the VMX3 is pretty good. I prefer running the SPARC by itself though, as the dot is much clearer.

Not really, because the base of the mount still wouldn't have enough space. I can do it properly, but that involves removing my BUIS which I prefer not to. Can mount it and show you a pic of what I mean a bit later.

Hmm I'm afraid of that issue because mine is a shorty build and have MBUIS as well. I currently like the eye relief I have on the SPARC by itself and don't want to move the SPARC forward. I don't want a permanent mount for any magnifier as I want to be able to swing it away when doing CQB range stages.

Here is an example of how I typically have it mounted with the SPARC and the BUIS. In order to squeeze the VMX3 in there I have to move the SPARC all the way forward and even then, they are almost touching.

Mine is mounted at the forward end of the receiver. So I might have enough space. I guess I'll have to do some measuring and research on the mounts. Thanks for the photo.

Here's my set up
T1 , with G33 magnifier and TROY BUIS,If your using MBUIS it will be very tight, the nice thing about Troy is you can mount it on the last section on the rail( rear most) .

So Far the G33 is the better of all magnifiers, thats including its own G23, 7degress more FOV and a tad lighter and more compact.
Try the Troy BUIS as I mentioned earlier,Troy BUIS is shorter in lenght compared to MBUIS you can utilized the last section of the rail and move your optics to the First rail (front) to give more room for the magnifier and optic.

I have a Aimpoint M4 .....doesn't get larger than that for a red dot and a Aimpoint 3X in Larue swing mount . There is plenty of room for a BUIS as well

As you can see the magnifier does not extend forward of the flip mount. The flip mount takes less than 2" of rail space

Problem with the Larue flip mount is the cost and availability

Thats what I talking about. it will be a different story if its not a Troy BUIS. I tried MBUIS, and its tight.

That looks good TRG-42. I'm thinking I should look at replacing my MBUIS with a Troy. Does that swing mount have a quick disconnect also?

Yes, the Larue magnifier flip mount has a locking lever on the opposite side....looks just like the one on the Aimpoint M4S

The pic above is a bad example since the Aimpoint M4S sits relatively far back . If it was an M2 or 3 Aimpoint or clone sitting in a forward cantilever mount there at least 1 if not 2 more rail rail slots of room there which should fit the Mbuis. As you can see in the pic above, I would be able to move the magnifier forward 1 rail slots. The Aimpoint M4S with its low batter compartment does not allow that. The standard M4 with top battery compartment of any other Aimpoint lets you snug them closer together
