I am in the market for a new scope and am looking for a 4-12x40 model.

I currently have a Redfield and really like it but would like to try another brand and see what else is out there. My price range is sub 300 plus tax and shipping if applicable. What I like so far are the following:

Nikon prostaff II
Vortex Diamondback
Leupold VXI

I have looked through the three and am stumped which to buy. The Leupold at the sales price is a great deal but what I could see in store it is comparable to the prostaff II which now claims 98% light transmission. The vortex was good to with a great warranty.

What experience have you guys had with these models? Particularly once you get them out of the store in real life lighting?

Is there anything notably missing? I have looked at the simmons aetec as well and thought they were decent. I wasn't crazy about the Vortex Crossfire. It seems like there is lots of talk about Bushnell having issues but that could be internet hysteria too.

Vortex gets good reviews for warranty if needed. Same with Leupold. Any thoughts on Nikon? Reviews seem mixed there.

I've been watching the EE too but it seems I'd be saving some money just paying full retail

The elite 3200 4-12x40 ao looks good too! I like the ao option. Anyone know what the difference between the bone collector and regular series is other than the waddell bone collector decal?

Has anyone seen the new Bushnell Legend that has rainguard? Have the added this to the legend line to bridge the gap between the Elite series and price point scopes?

The BoneCollector has the DOA reticle and a few other upgrades that were than incorporated into the entire Elite 3200 line up. The new Elite is not a bridge but is a very high quality scope with upgrades that exceed the former 4200 series. Think FF3 without the price. All Elite and Elite 3200/4200 scoopes feature Rainguard. I think that anyone searching for a scope should take a long hard look at Bushnell. I have an Elite 3200 3-9x40 and I compared it side by side with the Burris FF2. The Burris is no better in optics and the controls are just miles behind the Bushnell. Its no contest and I'm not even talking about the new Elite line up which can be had anywhere for sub 300 bucks.

I wasn't crazy about the bone collector's (last years model). That would be the Elite 3200 bone collector I saw at WSS. Other than the Waddell skull I didn't see anything to make it worth more than a stock 3200.

I'm waiting on a couple scopes to get shipped to the local WSS as they were out of stock. Hopefully there is a winner in the bunch.

My question about bridging the price gap was with the 3200 gone, have they made improvements to the Legend line (ie rainguard), to bridge the gap between standard bushnell and the Elite series. I don't doubt that the Elite is quality and didn't mean is that a bridge to the higher end bushnell.

Went with the Elite 3200 4-12x40 on for 279. If I had stayed closer to a $200 price I would have gone with the Nikon Prostaff 2 or another Redfield Revolution.

It came down to the vx-i and this scope. Of the two brought in the 3200 had a sharper image throughout the magnification and the AO is an added bonus. I was impressed with the vx-i as well but in the mid range power it seemed a bit fuzzy performing better nearest to its min and max power. I really like the Nikon and Redfield but have scopes from these manufacturers already. After looking through the 3200 and vx-i I found the Vortex Diamondback underwhelming. I thought it compared better to the Trophy line of scopes.

For a backup scope for the matchs, i choose the Redfield Revolution 4X12X40 for my Nemesis, i trust them very much... JP.

I like the Redfield I currently own. I also like the Nikon Omega. I got the 3200 to try a new flavour :)

It looks like the Revolution will be going up in price in the near future? Still a great scope for the money!

Bushnell was left off the op list,I think for good reason.

I had left it off before seeing the reduced prices on the 3200 series with the changeover to "Elite" at Bushnell.

At the original price of this scope I wouldn't have bought it but I think it was a great deal at 279.
