4.2 inch N frame build

I have been trying to have this done for a while. Finally thought I would check here to see if anyone else has done this and see if anyone can recommend a gunsmith in my area. I want to build a 4.2 inch -2 N frame, basically rebarrel and existing pinned barrel, recessed chamber model 27 or 29 to look as close to a factory 4 inch as possible. Anyone here done this? If you have pics of the finished product would be appreciated.

I have a 629 that the previous owner had rebarreled to 4.25 by gunner at armco. For what it cost, it would have been way cheaper to buy one, but at the time smith wasn't making 4.2. One of my least shot revolvers. I'll stick to 6 inches with 44 mag loads.
 
I have a 4.5" 29-2, but it was cut down, not re-barreled. It started life as an 8 3/8". Only complaint is that the lettering isn't centered (front/back), if I had gone 5" it would be. It didn't cost me anything but time and it shoots great. Might not be as pretty as a smith would do but I got what I paid for.



 
That's likely what I will end up doing. I want to do the same thing to a model 27. Thanks for the pictures I was wondering what the final product would look like. I have been looking for a factory barrel or a blank to avoid the off center lettering thing but I can live with it if need be. I have a 4.25 in 629 but much prefer older blued guns.

If you want a 4.2" gun, I would just buy a new 629. If you're going to the trouble of having a barrel shortened, 5" would be my choice, as it isn't readily available otherwise.

A pinned and recessed gun would not be my first choice for shortening. These features aren't necessarily an indicator of quality. Lots of pinned and recessed guns were made when S&W was owned by Bangor Punta, which was a low point for S&W. That said, 29-2s are fairly common and thus would be easy to find.

My first choice would be a 29-5 if you can find one: they have the durability enhancements and were made before MIM parts and after Bangor Punta.

Thanks for the info. I already have a 629 4.2 in. If there was a 4.2 627 I'd have one. The dash 2 thing is just a personal preference. Thanks again for the input.
