Well guys I just returned from another of my remote wilderness trips...

This time I was away for 8 weeks and 1 day... :D

I carried my 4.25" Ruger SRH in 454 Casull with either 300gr Hornady XTP-Mag JHP's or cast 405gr Beartooth WLNGC's.

I had numerous bear encounters with the most interesting one being a sow with 3 cubs that she shooed up a tree to a max of 12 different black bears within 100 yards of me in one day.

The cubs made it to the very top of the tree which was about 80' up in seconds but then the sow did something that I am not used to she also started to climb a tree and when she was about 10 yards up she stopped and looked back down at me.

She was snapping her jaws and then started raking the tree with her front claws ripping the bark of with ease.

I was standing about 25 yards from the sow while she was doing this and stayed there watching them for several minutes.

Having that powerful hand cannon in my hands while all of this was going on sure gave me a sense of security that I can only discribe as a calm.

Sorry guys no pic's my wife had the camera's again.

Interesting story. I remember those bear encounters made me inquire about guns and getting my CORE and all that fun stuff done. Some bears I stumbled upon did not behave well, especially younger ones - those are worst in that regard.

I think you were provoking sow though, being 25 yards away she could charge and you would have to put her down - totally unnecessary in my opinion. Cubs would not survive on their own either. So, three bears down, no meat no fur or any justification, out of season too.

Do you actually think I saw the sow and her cubs and trotted over to intentionally provoke her and endanger myself or the bears?

They went up the trees when I was only 25 yards from them and that was the first time I saw these bears...

I have to say I am absolutely amazed by your comments...

Well I am sorry if I am wrong, really not into any kind of interpersonal BS here. What you said (quoted above) made me think its provocative. Several minutes is a long time for being an accident. Sow normally conducts her little into the safety and then comes back to make sure intruder knows who is the boss. I see bears daily, today even, so I talk from my little experience. In your case cubs went on a tree and sow couldn't really get them stupid little kids down and away. And you were standing there making things worse. Do not bother replying - I am done talking.

That bear encounter sounds like my kind of fun! I don't see where camp cook acted improperly, it's not like he ran up to the damn bear and kicked her in the arse (although I'd like to see that!!!).

I would like to have that feeling when walking around in the city too someday.

I far prefer having to contend with bears and cougars than junkies and crack heads. That's why I live in the middle of nowhere ;)

I hope the thread simply started as a misunderstanding of Camp's encounter. Black bears evolved in forested areas and their standard means of cub defence is to send the cubs up a tree to safety and then either guard the bottom or follow them up the tree as well. The teeth clashing/jaw popping and clawing are displays to deter the threat, it is extremely rare and unlikely that a black bear sow will charge and actually contact the threat in a cub defence encounter. Standing and watching the bear for a few minutes at 25m wasn't provoking it......If it were a grizzly then the sow's response would have been entirely different as CC knows.
Cheers

Did I stay a bit to long maybe but I was transfixed to the spot...

It was so totally neat seeing those little cubs swaying in the breeze and the mother snapping away at me and ripping the bark off of the tree.

I spend weeks at a time in the most remote areas of BC and have hundreds of black bear encounters every year. In most cases the bears retreat as fast as they can. I wrote about this encounter because it was so cool...

Not to have some pissing match...

Camp Cook, that sounds like a great day in the wilds! Glad that you were ready if things went bad but being calm is the best thing. I would have stayed to watch the show for a bit then left when the mother started to calm down. Nothing like being out in the woods:D

I found that your encounter story was excellent, and someone like you who spend lot of time in the wood sure know what he is doing...Thank you to share with us that story, Question, Who make the SRH for you? Was the price OK? Any pic to share or a previous thread wre I can see the beast, I mean the 454??

Thank you

Please tell me you don't support carrying guns unconcealed and drawn.:p:p
